The one and only ‘King of Bollywood,’ Shah Rukh Khan is not just an actor. He hasn’t been for at least a few decades. Shah Rukh Khan is a feeling! The man will most certainly go down as one of the greatest actors and stars to have ever been active in the country, let alone Bollywood. From his humble television beginnings to his staggering accomplishments as a film star, the rise and rise of SRK is a story worth telling on its own. One that will be characterised by his charm, talent and relentlessness.
Apart from his legendary career, Shah Rukh Khan has also been popular for having forged many close friendships both inside and outside the film industry. One of the most significant of these friendships that he has shared for over three decades has been one with actress Juhi Chawla.
The Shah Rukh Khan – Juhi Chawla friendship
The duo have shared screen space in a number of films, which also include 90s classics such as Darr, Yes Boss and Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani. Every frame where they share screen space is evidence of an uncanny and endearing chemistry that is a translation of their off-screen bond. To deepen their professional ties, they even co-founded Dreamz Unlimited, which furthered their partnership. This friendship has not only been welcomingly accepted by audiences but is also an example of glowing camaraderie in an industry that can otherwise be very hostile.
What was the scandal involving a magazine?
Given the close bond they share, there was also a lot of speculation back in the day that Juhi Chawla and Shah Rukh Khan were dating. In the 1990s, a certain movie magazine released a story claiming that SRK and Juhi were dating each other. Gauri Khan, his wife, claims he was seriously angered by the accusations. She had said in an old Filmfare interview, “For that story about him and Juhi (Chawla) having an affair, they used a still from Darr. He went and broke up their office. I’ve learned to take these stories in my stride now. I trust Shah Rukh and share a great relationship with most of his co-stars.”
It is believed that, enraged, he stormed into the office of the magazine and confronted its personnel face-to-face and also physically wrecked some of the equipment. This outburst, not congruous with his general attitude, perhaps demonstrates how much he was hurt by these unfounded rumours and how fiercely Shah Rukh Khan wanted to defend his family and friends. This incident also harks back to another era in Bollywood, where celebrities very frequently have a more public and more direct confrontation with the press. While one shouldn’t condone wrecking an office, one should perhaps be mindful of actor’s privacy too. Don’t you agree?
