Ye Dil Mera: Sajal Ali and Ahad Raza Mir's Great Show is Marred By Inconsistencies

Sajal Ali and Ahad Raza Mir's popular tv show began with a bang but seems to be faltering now

Some television shows give you no hope. You know from the beginning that they are doomed to be named in the lists of forgotten tv shows that may have given the cast and the crew the paychecks they needed at the time but were they worthy of being memorable or rewatched? Absolutely not. From those sort of shows, all you do is get a laugh or a quick cry. But that’s it. What I didn’t expect Sajal Ali and Ahad Raza Mir’s Ye Dil Mera to land up in a list like that.

Written by Farhat Ishtiaq and directed by Ahson Talish, the tv show also stars Adnan Siddiqui, Paras Masroor, Mira Sethi, Naima Khan and Natasha Hussain. The story was about a young woman, Aina, who has nightmares and is clearly struggling with repressed trauma. She meets a handsome young businessman, Aman. They soon get married. What Aina doesn’t know is that Farooq (her father) is a devious psychopathic murderer and Aman and his family was one of his victims.

Now that’s an intriguing plot and has all the potential for a great thriller. Which, to be fair, it did gradually present itself to be. However, as time passed and as the episodes now stand at 29, audiences are complaining that the show is dragging and needs to end. Now.

That’s a sad and disappointing climax to a show that began with such promise and for the longest time, continued to hook audiences in with its pace and twists and turns.

Another big problem in the show is the supporting characters who cannot compare to the caliber of the main leads. As Sajal Ali delivers masterful scenes consistently, as Adnan Siddiqui knocks his performances out of the park, Ahad Raza Mir does the conflicted boy extremely convincingly, Paras Masroor does justice to his small but menacing role, the other small characters are shaky, inconsistent and out of place.

It’s not just the acting. There are various other problems users are quick to point out about Ye Dil Mera. In one scene Aina’s aunt (played by Natasha Hussain) flips through journals which she claimed were left by her sister years ago. Those journals look like they’ve just been purchased from the corner book shop twenty minutes ago.

In another scene, where Farooq’s wife (played by Mira Sethi) is wondering if her husband is an evil villain, everything around her seems to be screaming, “I’m a lifestyle ad for coffee and oil” because nothing around her is consistent with what she’s feeling. The ambience and set up of the scenes are often in the opposite direction of the dialogs or the situation.

In the past two episodes, the repetition has gone overboard. There have been far too many flashbacks and not enough logic has been given to why the characters are doing what they’re doing. Why won’t Aina just pick up the phone and call her father? Why are they stuck at Darya Bagh? How is she planning to prove her father’s innocence? Why has the dialog between Aman and his caretaker gone on for this long when all he had to say was, “hey take care of Aina if something happens to me”? Why has Farooq still been unable to find Aman despite all the horses and men he owns?

There are just far too many questions now and not enough answers. And like me, many users have figured out the answers already, which is a travesty, considering this was a show that was supposed to be a murder-mystery. Sajal, Ahad, Adnan seem to be wasted in these last few episodes though you can see them trying their hardest in doing what they can. But even the best of performances or a great plotline can’t take away from the fact that the last few episodes have been a trainwreck and the show deserved better.
