Yay! ‘Gully Boy’ Sequel To be Made
The Indian hip-hop scene has many stories to be told believes director Zoya Akhtar
It is one of the most acclaimed films to emerge out of Bollywood in recent times. Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy, starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, not just won over the critics but also scored big at the box-office. And now comes the good news. Apparently, Zoya Akhtar is already planning a sequel to this much-loved film.
Talking to Deccan Chronicle, Zoya said, “My co-writer Reema Kagti and I do feel there’s so much more to be said on the entire hip-hop culture in our country. And another film exploring the theme is being scripted and planned.”
It is not clear at this point whether it would be an extension of Murad (Ranveer Singh) and Safeena’s (Alia Bhatt) story or if it would be something that would just take the legend of Indian hip-hop further. Zoya was also asked why she didn’t consider brother Farhan Akhtar in her film and her reason was rather surprising. “He just didn’t fit into Gully Boy. And we’re both sorry about it. Also, his image from the Rock On series is affiliated to an entirely different genre of music. It would have been a bit of a culture shock for the audience to suddenly see him swerve from stadium-rock to hip-hop.”
Incidentally, Gully Boy is the first Zoya Akhtar directorial that does not feature Farhan Akhtar. He was the lead in her debut Luck by Chance, played one of the leads in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara along with Hrithik Roshan and Abhay Deol and did a cameo in Dil Dhadakne Do.
