Films To Watch Women's Day 2019

Women’s Day 2019 is going to be here soon – it’s on March 8th and this year we’ve picked our favorite female-centric films that have celebrated women’s empowerment and their agency via films.

1. Piku

Starring Deepika Padukone, Irrfan Khan and Amitabh Bachchan, this film was unapologetically feminist. Written by Juhi Chaturvedi and directed by Shoojit Sircar, this was a slice of life film that was not only centred around a strong female protagonist, but also celebrated her strength in a light-hearted way.

2. Lipstick Under My Burkha

A black comedy written and directed by Alankrita Shrivastava, the film stars Konkona Sen Sharma, Ratna Pathak, Aahana Kumra and Plabita Borthakur. The film is a collection of various female characters going through different conflicts and got critical acclaim all around.

3. Kahaani 2

Written and directed by Sujoy Ghosh, Kahaani 2 sees Vidya Balan as Vidya – who is on a mission to find her missing daughter. It’s a mystery thriller that disproved the myth that only men can execute commercially and critically successful mystery/action thrillers.

4. Stree

This was an unlikely film that turned into a box office hit and one of the most feminist films in the past. Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor star in this horror flick where a strong feminist theme is the core of the story. We can’t tell you the whole story because if we do, we’ll spoil the film for you – but you must definitely check it out, if you haven’t already.

5. Secret Superstar

Zaira Wasim and Meher Vij star in this sweet but real tale of a mother and a daughter who are living a very bad life. Produced by Aamir Khan and written by Advait Chandan, the film also starred Aamir Khan in a secondary character. The story is not just an empowering tale but also an emotional one!
