Now, Tollywood isn’t exactly known for being very friendly to women-centric themes but the trend seems to be changing at least in Malayalam. In the last couple of years, there have been some very significant films revolving around actresses and the heartening news is that they have been well-acclaimed commercially and critically. Actresses like Meera Jasmine, Rima Kallingal, Shwetha Menon among others are at the forefront of this new wave aided by liberal and modern filmmakers and actors like Aashiq Abu and Fahadh Faasil. We were particularly impressed by films like 22 Female Kottayam (last year’s runaway hit which started the trend), 100 Degree Celcius, Ithinumappuram and Aanju Sundarigal. What’s more rather than reinforce stereotypes about women, these films portray them very realistically. Hopefully, it should continue and become the norm rather than the exception.
