When Shatrughan Sinha Made a Snarky Remark at Asha Parekh - Blast from the Past
Asha Parekh and Shatrughan Sinha didn't get along. What happened and how did they deal with it? Read on...
Shatrughan Sinha was always an outspoken man. Known to invariably arrive late for his shootings, he called the shots and did his own thing even when he was a struggler. In his first release, Sajan in 1969, where he had a brief cameo Shatrughan Sinha was said to have gotten into a heated argument with the film’s leading lady Asha Parekh who was a very big star back then. She vowed never to work with SS again , and she kept her word. There was no film featuring the names ‘Asha Parekh’ and ‘Shatrughan Sinha’ together.
Until 1973, when director Sultan Ahmed cast Shatrughan Sinha as a villain in the dacoit drama Heera. The lead actors were Sunil Dutt and Asha Parekh. Apparently AP and SS were unwilling to work together. But director Sultan Ahmed was going through a financial crisis. He needed a hit badly and he needed his actors to co-operate.
Both SS and AP reluctantly agreed to do Heera. But on the very first day of their shooting together for the song Aaj nachun aise ke aag lag jaye when Asha Parekh was to touch Sinha’s hand he shouted, ‘Dettol lao Dettol lao’ after the shot. This was his mock-protest about coming in physical contact with his sworn enemy.
The film was somehow completed. And Heera was a massive hit. I asked both Asha Parekh and Shatrughan Sinha about the incident. They both laughed it off. “When you are young you do a lot of indiscreet impulsive things. Better forgotten,” Ashaji told me.Amen to that.
