When Nagma Sang Karisma Kapoor’s Song
What happens when two real-life couples are no longer together? Your song goes to another person!
What happens when a couple in love breaks up before the film it had so lovingly signed and shot for, is completed? Ajay Devgan and Karisma Kapoor were very much together when director Kuku Kohli launched Suhaag in 1994 with Ajay Devgan-Karisma Kapoor, Akshay Kumar-Nagma.
As luck would have it, Ajay and Karisma broke up before Suhaag could be completed. The situation left Kuku Kohli with an unused potential chartbuster song entitled Gore gore mukhde pe kala kala chashma tauba Khuda khair kare khoob hai Karisma…
As the last word in the mukhda (opening lines) suggested, the song was designed for Karisma Kapoor. However when she refused to shoot with Devgan it was passed on to the film’s other lead pair Akshay Kumar and Nagma. That’s how Akshay ended up getting one of the biggest chartbusters of his career.
Real-life couples can be dangerous for a film. Shahid Kapoor and Kareena ended their relationship by the time Imtiaz Ali ended Jab We Met. They only had the promotion song Mauja hi mauja remaining to be shot. This, they did, amicably.
If only every broken-up couple was as professional. When Dilip Kumar broke up with Madhubala he had her replaced in Naya Daur with Vyjanthimala, all hell broke loose. But that’s another story. On the other hand, Kamal Amrohi and Meena Kumari ceased to be man and wife when they were working on Pakeezah. They finally completed it in 14 years.
