If you love your desi radio (and in Dubai, there is hardly anyone who doesn’t!), you would be familiar with Charanpreet Sethi aka RJ Prince’s voice as he entertains his fans with his funny antics and accents on Suno 1024. The popular RJ is a familiar name in the social circle as he hosts shows and now even does movie reviews. But now, Prince has a very special plan up his sleeve. Joining the bandwagon of artistes who has moved to the digital space, the RJ will now be seen in a webseries, funnily titled O Vatsyayana. It is directed by actor-filmmaker Kabir Sadanand who has been seen in films like Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein, Chameli, Good Boy, Bad Boy among others as well as several television shows like Shagun, Virasat, Dhadkan etc. Once ready, the film will stream on YouTube Channel of Frogs Lehren. So what’s a Dubai RJ doing in a film on Kamasutra?? Over to Prince…
When did you start acting? Was the desire always there to be an actor?
Well, the desire was always there. When I was a child, the desire was to watch as many movies as possible and then during teens and thereafter, I desired to act in them.
How did you get this opportunity to be part of a web series?
Frankly, the entire credit goes to director Kabir Sadanand who had heard my humour and style of presentation on radio and he had full faith that I could do justice to it on the big screen as well.
The title is quite quirky. What is it all about?
Ha ha ha, yes, it indeed is, isn’t it? Basically, the entire series is a humorous take on the Kamasutra originally written by Vatsayana. It is quirky and you will have to watch it to know exactly how we are treating the love treatise (laughs).
What is your role?
I can’t reveal too much at the moment. All I can say that it’s a really funny character. Almost like the mythical ‘naradmuni’ (a famous mythological character who was known to spread gossip and instigate people). My role is that of someone who instigates and challenges Vatsayana.
What was your overall experience of working on this series? Who were your co-stars?
I loved the experience! Firstly, because it involved a dhow type of cruise ride to get to the set of the shoot. And since it was a non-stop12 hour daily shift, I got to learn a great deal about how it’s all done. More importantly, it was fun to work with an experienced film maker and actor like Kabir Sadanand. He knew exactly what he wanted. Among the actors, it was great to share screen space with Amit Behl among others. Amit especially was quite interesting because he has put in a lot of years in the television industry and he has also been instrumental in opening a huge acting institute in Delhi recently.
Given the plethora of entertainment options available digitally, how do you think a web series can make a mark with the audience?
Web series are the in-thing these days. Everyone’s talking and watching some series or the other. The huge names in Bollywood, be it directors, producers, actors or even major production houses and TV channels are all churning out digital content. That itself explains the shift towards it. I am glad I had the opportunity to act in one.
Do you plan to pursue more acting assignments or is it a one-off?
I would absolutely love to pursue acting and given an opportunity, I would definitely grab one if I feel strongly about it or if the director feels that I can be a part of it. I would give it my best shot.
