Bollywood star Varun Dhawan has been churning out hits after hits ever since his acting debut in 2012 with Student of the Year. The actor has even worked with some of the biggest names in the industry such as Shah Rukh Khan in Dilwale, a special appearance with Salman Khan in Bharat and Karan Johar’s muti-starrer Kalank, however, the last did not fare too well at the box office. In 2017, he also starred in the remake of 1997’s Judwaa, which originally had Salman as the lead helmed by Varun’s father, David Dhawan. And while Varun has worked with some of the best directors in the industry, he still hasn’t signed a film with his father, until now.
Reports revealed that Varun and David’s first project together will be the remake of 1995’s Coolie No. 1, which originally starred Govinda and Karisma Kapoor. The film is all set to go on floors in London; however, the city does not have any train stations or porters anymore. This raised the question of how David will be shooting the remake of Coolie No.1. Now, sources close to the production team have confirmed that the director will be scratching off the “coolie” angle completely.
Speaking to The Deccan Chronicle, David revealed, “It’s not going to be a complete remake. Coolie No. 1 was 25 years ago. Society has changed radically since then. How can we have the same situation in the new film? There will be no coolie, no VT Station, in London or otherwise.” He also chuckled on rumours that stated that a VT station would be created in London and added that he will only take the core plot of the original film and turn it into a completely different film. The plot of the original film circulated around a low-income porter, who tries to pose as a millionaire to woo a rich man’s daughter.
Another source close to the team stated, “Only the title of the original film will be used, just like Farah Khan’s Tees Maar Khan. Her film had nothing to do with any Khan as it starred Akshay Kumar as the main role. Sometimes, a title is catchy and has great recall-value. So even though Varun Dawan will star in Coolie No. 1, he won’t play a porter.” The upcoming film also stars Sara Ali Khan opposite Varun and is expecting to begin shooting in London soon.
