Uri: The Surgical Strike

Released on January 11 2019, Uri was the directorial debut of Aditya Dhar who is also wrote the film. The movie is a theatrical military action depicting the retaliation of the 2016 Uri attack.

Uri follows Major Vihaan Singh Shergill of the Indian army, played by Vicky Kaushal. He plays the lead in the events that led to the Indo-Pak situation. The movie also stars Paresh Rawal, Mohit Raina, and Yami Gautam in lead roles. Its total gross net in India was INR 2, 44, 50, 000 – it did business of over US$55 million worldwide. It is among the top ten Hindi films with the highest domestic net collection.


Released on March 21 2019, Kesari is a joint production of Karan Johar, Aruna Bhatia, Hiroo Yash Johar, Apoorva Mehta and Sunir Khetarpal under the banners of Dharma Productions, Cape of Good Films, Azure Entertainment and Zee Studios. It earned INR 1, 51, 87, 50,000 – making it the second top net grosser of the year.

Kesari stars Akshay Kumar with Parineeti Chopra, Mir Sarwar, Vansh Bhardwaj, Jaspreet Singh, Vivek Saini and Vikram Kochhar. It is the story of events leading up to the Battle of Saragarhi – a fight between 21 soldiers of the 36th Sikhs of the British Indian Army and 6,000–10,000 Afridi and Orakzai Pashtun tribesmen in 1897.

Total Dhamaal

The Ajay Devgn, Madhuri Dixit, Anil Kapoor, Riteish Deshmukh, Arshad Warsi and Javed Jaffrey starrer was released on February 22 2019. The adventure-action comedy is a slapstick adaptation of 1963 Hollywood flick It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World. It grossed INR 1, 50, 07, 50, 000 in India and did a business of US$33 million worldwide.

Gully Boy

The Zoya Akhtar directorial was released on February 14 2019 with Ranvir Singh and Alia Bhatt in lead roles. The musical drama was co-written by Akhtar and Reema Kagti and produced by Zoya and Farhan Akhtar, and Ritish Sidhwani under the banners of Tiger Baby and Excel Entertainment. Kalki Koechlin, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Vijay Raaz played supporting leads.

The movie was inspired by Indian street rappers Divine and Naezy – it is a coming of age story about an aspiring street rapper from the slums of Mumbai. The movie grossed INR1, 34, 21, 50, 000 in India and US$36 million globally. It had the production budget of US$12 million.
