It's been rumoured that yesteryear Bollywood stars Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan had an affair back in the 1970s, however, the latter has never accepted it. On the other hand, the Umrao Jaan actress has been very vocal about the relationship that the two of them had. In an interview conducted by Simi Garewal in 2004, Rekha openly admitted to once having feelings for the Paa actor. She said, "I have yet to come across a single man, woman or child who can't help but fall completely, passionately, insanely, desperately and hopelessly in love with Amitabh. So why should I be singled out? What do I deny? That I am not in love with him? Of course I am."
Rekha explained, "I want to have the honour of being associated with this person, so what is stopping me? I am not here to 'break' his home. I am here to be one of the lesser mortals who can just have a whiff of him and feel happy."
The actress also admitted to seeing him at multiple functions. She added, "I see him a lot at functions. He's a very sweet human being and his memory is very sharp. That one Namaste says it all." Later, The Indian Express spoke to Simi in regards to her interview with Rekha, where the latter answered questions about her relationship with Amitabh. Simi revealed, "It was easy asking her about Amitabh. If I can ask Jayalalaitha if she was ever in love with M.G. Ramachandran, asking Rekha about Amitabh was much easier."
She continued, "A lot of people asked me how I got her to open up. But the truth is, I don't know if I did anything special. I don't want to analyse it but I just chatted with her as good friends. Rekha and I go way back."
Simi also explained why Amitabh and Rekha never worked with each other after Silsila. She concluded, "After all that controversy, I don't think it was an easy thing to happen. He is a married man with children and grandchildren. So much had happened already. But I do agree that the two made a lovely couple on screen."
Rekha and Amitabh have starred in multiple films together such as Do Anjaane, Mr. Natwarlal. Muqaddar ka Sikandar and Suhaag. However, the two have never worked opposite each other since 1981's Silsila.
