Vidya Balan was in the UAE last week for the promotion of her movie Ghanchakkar.

A city hotel in the middle of everything did not sound relaxing at first. However, when I stepped into the gorgeously appointed lobby of The Ritz-Carlton, DIFC, relaxation in the heart of Dubai seemed suddenly possible. During Ramadan's hot days especially, the thought that one could break one's fast in a number of amazing iftars close to, or even within the hotel and go to Dubai Mall, a mere five minutes away, made this the perfect spot to get away for a quick weekend.

We opted to stay in the deluxe suite and were surprised by how spacious it was. The bathroom especially, was cavernous, with Asprey toiletries, a plush rain shower and more closet space than we knew what to do with. The perfectly appointed mattress and bedding were additional highlights. We also loved the fact that there were two TVs and an extra half bathroom. Modern but cosy is how we would describe these luxurious premises. The floor that we stayed on also had a lounge for guests who were staying in suites, which we liked. It's a great spot to meet friends and relax if you don't want them in your room.

There are several restaurants in the hotel. We suggest Centre Cut for you to break your fast. Delicious cuts of steak served on heated stones along with decadent sides, are just the rush you need after a whole day of fasting. We particularly recommend you finish your iftar with the sticky date pudding that tastes like a sticky toffee pudding. Also, the unique Ramadan garden, open during The Holy Month, is said to serve delicious and authentic Arabic specialties, including a divine Umm Ali and a live Fateh station, along with Arabic sushi.

The spa's entrance was fitting for a city hotel like The Ritz- Carlton, DIFC. However, I was taken aback by how luxuriously stocked the dressing room was for a smaller establishment. After wearing a soft towel robe and being led to the treatment room for my East-Meets-West Signature Massage, my polite masseuse washed my feet in warm water. After patting them dry and cleaning between the digits (always a plus and overlooked by most other spas I have been to), I was asked if I wanted an energising or a soothing massage; I opted for the latter. What stands out, other than a stellar massage, was how much my masseuse knew about any question I had. She talked me through the process and was communicative every step of the way. Also, she combined deep tissue and soothing strokes expertly – a rare combination to find.
