The Rishi Kapoor Playlist: 15 Songs That Prove He is the Ultimate Romantic Hero

Sadiq Saleem pays a musical tribute to Rishi Kapoor, the eternal charmer

Remember the scene from the film Luck by chance when Farhan Akhtar makes a confession to Dimple Kapadia and says ‘I am in this world because of you’? I pretty much had a similar moment with Rishi Kapoor and my confession happened when I had the good fortune of interviewing him. I told him that my parents are his huge admirers and their first date was when they went to watch his film Sargam. 35 years later, I got married and my dramatic entry was choreographed on Meri Umar KeNau-jawanon from Rishi’s film called Karz. It just proves that Rishi Kapoor’s songs are loved across generations, to date.

With a guitar in his hands and a smile on his lips, Rishi became famous as the eternal lover in Khel Khel Mein, Kabhi Kabhi, Raffoo Chakkar and Hum Kisise Kam Nahin. Paired with the pert Neetu Singh in most of his films, Rishi who successfully brought caliber even to romantic trifles, tasted massive musical success again with Laila Majnu. As the dafliwala in Sargam and as the pop singer in Karz, Rishi had the nation swinging to his energetic dance numbers. With the spunky Parda Hai in Amar Akbar Anthony, the school boy charm in the song Ek mein aur ek tu,and the tribal anthem Kaho Kaisay Rasta Bhoolgaye, Rishi’s dived straight into the hearts of the audiences. Prem Rog and Chaandini were the albums that were for keeps in the 80’s; while with Deewana, Bol Radha Bol and Henna, he continued his winning streak in the 90’s and beyond.

As a tribute to this legend, Masala! presents ‘Rishi Kapoor’s Playlist’ that can be anyone’s faithful companion today and for decades to come.

Until his death, the industry’s oldest romantic was seeking new avenues but the audience did not want to see Rishi in any other light. For millions, he was and will always be the standard torch bearer of romance for the longest time.
As his father sang:
Kal khel mein, hum ho na ho,
Gardish me tare rahenges ada,
Bhuloge tum bhulenge woh,

Par hum tumhare rahenge sada

Rishi Kapoor, will remain one of those lucky film stars who will always be remembered not only because of his films, but also for his songs.
