The Good Place and Why It’s One of the Smartest Shows You’ll See

The Good Place on NBC is one of the smartest shows on television right now and you should totally bingewatch it asap

Why do we do what we do? What is the purpose of human contact? Is there an afterlife? What makes humans behave in a better way? Do we do what we do because we believe in a reward or do we behave as good human beings because that’s just the decent thing to do?

These and other questions are asked by NBC’s television show The Good Place starring Kristen Bell, Ted Danson, William Jackson Harper, Jameela Jamil, D’Arcy Carden, and Manny Jacinto. Costarring with Tiya Sircar, Marc Evan Jackson and Maya Rudolph, the show is created by Michael Schur who has previously been involved creatively in hit television shows such as Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine Nine and The Office.

The story revolves around Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell) who wakes up in the afterlife and realizes that she’s in the ‘Good Place’. This place has an architect named Michael (Ted Danson) who has designed the whole place for the humans. Chidi Anagonye (William Jackson Harper) is said to be her ‘soulmate’ whereas Tahani Al Jamil (Jameela Jamil) and Jianyu/Jason (Manny Jacinto) are a couple next door to Eleanor’s who are also inhabiting this Good Place.

The Good Place is one of the smartest television shows you’ll see because it not only has cutting humor and top notch performances by the cast (especially Ted Danson), it also incorporates the basic tenets of philosophy into real life application. Well, as real as life can be for the characters in the show.

Kristen Bell’s character, Eleanor Shellstrop, is rough around the edges, to say the least. But her journey from an all-around hack to a reformed individual is incredibly human and that’s what’s so great about it. It retains the essence of its main characters and doesn’t really give them easy ‘outs’ just to resolve their storylines.

The series has been renewed for its fourth and final season and without a doubt it deserves all the accolades for trying to tie up a subject as boring as moral philosophy with pretty humans in a gorgeous looking place fighting for survival. The tv show’s first 2 seasons are available on Netflix MENA and the show will finish its fourth season by the end of January 2020.
