The 10 Biggest Flop Movies of 2018 in Bollywood
They came with a lot of hope, there was a huge hype around them yet none of them could make a mark at the box office
Bollywood had delivered numerous flops last year like any other year but last year was different. Last year, the biggest flops were the films that had the biggest expectations riding on them. In the year 2018, content was king and not the Khans.
The year 2018 was also different from all other previous years because it saw the crash of all the three Khans at the box office which is unprecedented in Bollywood history.
Hence, 2018 will be remembered as one of the watershed years of Bollywood that changed the course of film history and also the year that saw the rise of platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime which produced many super-hit series like Sacred Games and Mirzapur.
Here are the top 10 failures at the Bollywood box office ranked according to their box office collections in India.
1. Thugs Of Hindostan: Box office collection: Rs 145 crore
Even though the film collected more than 100 crores, the film was touted as a flop because of its high costs of production that far exceeded 100 crores. This is the film where Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan came together for the first time. Nobody could predict that the film would end up to be such a disappointment.
2. Zero: Box office collection: Rs 92 crores
Despite having Shah Rukh Khan in the lead and the deluge of promotions, the film ended up being a massive flop. Zero garnered a good opening but bad word-of-mouth ensured that the film didn't stand the test of time. In the end, the collections were not enough to cover the production costs.
3. Batti Gul Meter Chalu: Box office collection: Rs 37.73 crore
This film starred Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor and was directed by Shree Narayan Singh who had previously directed Toilet: Ek Prem Katha. Despite having good content, this film stumbled at the box office because of bad word-of-mouth.
4. Aiyaary: Box office collection: Rs 18.22 crore
The primary cause of the failure of this film is attributed to the fact that it was not promoted properly. The release date also kept on changing incessantly. Aiyaary got good reviews for its taut storyline but those could not translate into box office collections.
5. Fanney Khan: Box office collection: Rs 10.55 crore
This Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan comeback film didn't open with a good number and couldn't sustain its box office run.
6. Namaste England: Box office collection: Rs 8.10 crore
The primary reason of Namaste England flopping may be attributed to its faulty storyline that hinged on an uneven plot. The on-screen chemistry between Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra was also not appreciated.
7. Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se: Box office collection: Rs 9.60 crore
The last film of the same franchise was a massive hit. But the bad plot of this film ensured that it didn't sustain over the weekend. YPD starred the two Deol brothers along with their legendary father Dharmendra but they could not create any magic.
8. Paltan: Box office collection: Rs 7.50 crore
This film marked the return of JP Dutta after Border but this one was very different. The plot of the film seemed like a cliché and it didn't work well.
9. Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3: Box office collection: Rs 6.68 crore
A lot of hopes was pinned on this film because the earlier movies in the series were much appreciated by the audience. But this one turned out to be a dud.
10. Helicopter Eela: Box office collection: Rs 4.13 crore
This Kajol-starrer came with a lot of promise but as it turned out in the end, it could neither fit here nor there when it came to the narrative. The story was about over-possessive parents but the filmmakers took the concept too far and despite Kajol's presence, it couldn't be salvaged at the box office.
