Street Dancer 3D Box Office Collection: Varun Dhawan’s Film Races Ahead of Kangana Ranaut’s Panga
Street Dancer, despite mediocre reviews, opens much better than Panga which is a woman-centric film
This doesn’t look like a very favourable year for sheroes. At least not in the initial part of the new year. While 2019 was a virtual celebration of woman power, with female actors dominating the box-office in Badlaa (Taapsee Pannu), Mission Mangal (Taapsee Pannu, Vidya Balan) and Manikarnika (Kangana Ranaut), 2020 has opened poorly for the biggest female actor Deepika Padukone with Chhapaak, directed by Meghna Gulzar failing to create a splash. Despite great reviews and a huge controversy surrounding Deepika’s JNU visit, before the release of the film, Chhapaak has not managed huge numbers at the box office though it is not a flop either.
It looks like a similar story has been repeated with last week’s releases. Kangana Ranaut who had a fairly successful January release (Manikarnika) in 2019, has opened to an underwhelming audience in Panga. Friday audiences have come away disappointed by the film’s predictable arc and the lack of USPs. Not a heartening opening for director Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari whom one expected to move to the next level with Panga after the successful Bareilly Ki Barfi. According to trade website, Panga had a weekend collection of INR 11.25crore only.
Remo D’Souza’s Street Dancer starring Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor, on the other hand, opened on a high note with audiences taking to the dance and drama wholeheartedly. Early reports from leading multiplexes predict another big hit for Varun Dhawan and producers T Series whose previous January release Tanhaji is still releasing to full houses all across India and overseas. The film had a pretty good weekend of about INR 39 crore.
An unnamed personnel from a leading multiplex chain told this writer on Friday, “Going by early trends it looks like Street Dancer is far ahead. Panga hasn’t gotten itself enough shows, even the shows that they have got are not primetime slots. So it’s bound to suffer. I’d say it was a mistake to release Panga with a big 3D spectacle.”
