Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor starrer is the story of two rival dance groups from India and Pakistan. The drama-romance film has been directed by Remo D’souza.
Street Dancer 3D, starring Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor, was released theatrically on Friday, 24th January. Directed by Remo D’souza, the drama-romance film is about two rival dance groups from India and Pakistan. Based in London, it also stars Nora Fatehi and several dance reality show stars. The film, released on 3,700 screens in India and on 710 screens overseas, had a good opening at the box office, minting INR 10.26 crore, although this was below expectations. Film trade analyst, Taran Adarsh tweeted, “#StreetDancer3D opens in double digits on Day 1... Should’ve collected higher, since youth-centric films, generally, open big... Biz affected in #Mumbai circuit due to #Tanhaji wave... Big growth on Day 2 and 3 essential for a strong total... Fri ₹ 10.26 cr. #India biz.”
The film — which is competing at the ticket windows with Kangana Ranaut’s Panga — has been appreciated for its dance sequences but criticised for its weak storyline. India Today’s reviewer Jyoti Kanyal wrote, “Street Dancer 3D is enjoyable if you like dance to the extent of watching it for two hours non-stop. There are some emotional moments which may make you cry. But if you are going to watch it solely for the performances of the lead actors - Varun and Shraddha - then skip at ease.”
Rajeev Masand wrote on News18, “For nearly two and a half hours we’ve been subjected to corny plotting and hammy performances. Nora Fatehi is most nimble on the dance floor, but her permanent deer-in-the-headlights expression does not amount to acting. The usually dependable Aparshakti Khurrana is reduced to a slobbering mess as a down-on-his-luck immigrant desperate to return to his watan. Shraddha Kapoor does what she can with the slim material, Varun Dhawan over-compensates by overacting.”
