Call it the surprise hit of the year so far! Horror-comedy Stree, starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, is on its way to collecting huge numbers. Trade website boxofficeindia.com says that film showed growth on Saturday, collecting around INR 10.50 crore nett. This takes its two day total to INR 17 crore, given that it had a great opening day (Friday) of nearly INR 8 crore.
Trade pundit Taran Adarsh also tweeted about the fab numbers Stree is putting up.
#Stree catches speed and hits double digits on Day 2... The low costs and high theatrical returns makes it a BIG SUCCESS... Expect further growth on Day 3... Eyes ₹ 30 cr [+/-] weekend... Fri 6.82 cr, Sat 10.87 cr. Total: ₹ 17.69 cr. India biz.— taran adarsh (@taran_adarsh) September 2, 2018
The opening itself took the industry by surprise considering it was up against a film that had three stars – Dharamendra, Bobby Deol and Sunny Deol – in Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se. Plus, last week’s film – Sonakshi Sinha’s Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi – is still playing in the theatres as are Akshay Kumar’s Gold and John Abraham’s Satyamev Jayate. But the audience, it seemed preferred to watch Rajkummar Rao and Pankaj Triphati’s rib-tickling comedy about a ghost who torments men in a small town in India. With Sunday being a holiday followed by the festival of Janmashtami on Monday, the film is expected to further consolidate its position.
What has worked in Stree’s favour was the very positive word-of-mouth and great reviews. Almost all prominent reviewers have appreciated the film and the performances which is being seen in the box office numbers. The combination of horror and comedy, a rather unusual genre, has worked well. It also goes to prove that content-based films, especially those with a huge dose of comedy, finds favour with the audience. Stree is also one of those rare films that seems to have struck a chord with both, the critics and the masses.
The success once again proves Rajkummar Rao’s versatility as an actor as his performance as a love-lorn tailor has come in for special praise.
