A lazy weekend of doing nothing except standing and staring into the sea. An action-packed mini break with adventure, fun and lots of activities. A long, rejuvenating drive along smooth roads with fabulous views of the mountains and the sea. Fujairah checks all of the above boxes and more and it’s no wonder why it is such a staycation favourite among Dubaiites.
Now, there is yet another reason to pack your bags and head to this Emirate – the InterContinental Fujairah Resort, a new destination that has opened its doors for vacationers and staycationers. The familiar ingredients are all there – the exquisite shoreline of the Al Aqah Beach, the raucous sea, the sturdy Hajjar Mountain backdrop, and the added element of InterContinental luxury and hospitality. It was just what the doctor ordered for us for a short trip outside Dubai.
Unlike several other resorts, InterContinental surprisingly opts for the muted, understated look rather than going OTT in the interiors. Warm tones dominate the colour palette and the décor is very Arabesque and welcoming. There is a certain elegance to the entire look that is rather soothing to the eye. Frankly, we weren’t too impressed with the façade of the resort which doesn’t ooze the wow factor you have come to associate with UAE hotels but once you are inside, it seems a different world. Yes, this was a place that immediately made us forget our big city stress!
InterContinental Fujairah, in a nutshell, is for those who are looking for a quieter, more reflective time amidst the sea and the mountains. The rooms give off an intimate vibe. Decorated with elegant touches that take inspiration from the scenery, the airy rooms and suites have everything needed for a modern day traveller. The balconies of the Classic rooms aren't too expansive but overlooks the very well-manicured gardens and the sea beyond while the Suites are a pure delight – spacious balconies, stunning views and a huge dollop of luxury.
We spent half some time just lazing in bed, eyes constantly drifting towards the sea. After a while it was time to hit the pool, with a drink in hand. A refreshing swim later, we decided to take a walk along the beach. And take it from us, no sight is more beautiful than watching the sun being swallowed by the sea, its rays colouring the mountains. Just for this sunset alone, we can drive to Fujairah every weekend! There are water sports available for the adventure enthusiasts too. And then there is the spa – the O Spa by L’Occitane that is a sheer haven for the stressed out soul. Unforunately, we couldn't try the very tempting treatments but that's for another time!
If there is a grouse we could list, it would be the F & B options. The resort has only two of them of significance, Nama – the main restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and Drift – the beach bar and grill. We loved the three beach fire pits created near Drift (ideal for a family or friendly get-together around the pit) but the food leaves a lot to be desired, especially in terms of the choices available. The buffet at Nama was elaborate though and the service, excellent.
Our vote for InterContinental Fujairah would be for wedding and intimate events. This is a venue that would make for a thousand insta-worthy moments. Nearly 200 rooms and suites to choose from, a dedicated events team to make it special and the joy of lazing in natural beauty around – what more do you need to make for a memorable break from routine?
