Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja Wedding: 7 Things We Learnt From the Celebrations
Like any other event Sonam Kapoor's wedding also left behind lessons for lesser mortals. Here are some of them.
Going by social media feeds and the news channels, it seemed that there was no bigger event in the country than Sonam Kapoor’s wedding. There were rumours galore about the venue, but the Kapoors kept mum (wonder why!). Anyway, now it’s there for the world to see and boy, what a wedding it has turned out to be! We got an opportunity to indulge in endless star gazing, marvelled at Karan Johar and Anil Kapoor’s uninhibited dancing and gawked at the outfits sported by the guests, hosts and the bride and groom (#weddingfashiongoals). But besides all of that, there were other important, life lessons that the three-day celebrations taught us.
1) YOU CAN CONDUCT A BIG FAT WEDDING AT HOME
Initially, we were told that the Sonam-Anand wedding would be held in Switzerland. Perfect location considering Sonam’s princess-y image. It would have to be something as grand and romantic for T’town’s style queen, right? But no, like all of us, even the Kapoors had to change the venue at the last minute! Sources say, it was because the logistics was proving to be too much! (Maybe they should have taken inspo from the millionaire industrialists who hold cruise weddings and destination weddings for their wards!). Whatever be the reason, the Kapoors shifted the wedding to – hold your breath – not a fancy 5-star in Mumbai but their home! And guess what, it worked perfectly fine.
2) YOU CAN KEEP IT INTIMATE YET INVITE EVERYONE
The wedding guest list is enough to give even the most well-placed family, a headache. Remember how the Bachchans suffered in 2007 during the Abhi-Ash wedding when a mighty number of people were miffed for being left out? Anil Kapoor proved that you can keep a ceremony within the confines of home yet invite all those you want. How he managed that is a miracle but he did! Lesson: You don’t need a big, gorgeous venue to invite the people you want.
3) YOU CAN KEEP THE MEDIA AWAY… YET NOT ANNOY THEM
Now, the media is an entity you cannot miss if you are a celebrity. Imagine the chaos that would have ensued if the wedding was at a big venue! The Kapoors hid the details of the ceremonies till the last moment. Even guests were apparently sworn to secrecy. The doors of the household were obviously closed to the media but the PR-savvy family ensured that no one was angry. Apparently, the poor paps who were left snapping the guests entering the household, were given water and snacks. But did it result in lack of coverage? No way! With social media, everyone knew what was happening inside. Videos and photographs that the esteemed guests posted did the job better than any pap would have.
4) THERE IS NO NEED TO COMPROMISE ON TRADITION WHILE HAVING FUN
Sonam is the millennial icon while Anand Ahuja seems the typical cool dude. Yet it was heart-warming to see the Kapoors stick to every tradition and ritual. And later it was equally fun to see the bride and groom groove in their traditional outfits.
5) SILLY THINGS HAPPEN… YOUR BROTHER CAN GET STUCK IN TRAFFIC
So what if you are a celebrity! Mumbai’s (or any other big city) traffic can spoil the best laid plans. Ask poor Arjun Kapoor! He nearly missed his sister’s mehendi cos he was struck in traffic. Fortunately he made it and danced his heart out.
6) YOU ARE ALLOWED TO DANCE BADLY AT A WEDDING
And we thought Bollywood stars are great dancers! But a close look at the reception videos show that our A-list stars too can be terrible dancers like most of us! At desi weddings, if you notice, guests are mostly seen flailing their arms about and moving around in a stupor to Punjabi songs. That’s what Salman, Ranveer, Shah Rukh and Anil seemed to do here too! Sans a choreographer, their moves seemed like those of any other party-goer! Bindaas, uninhibited and least bothered if they were getting the steps right.
7) YOU CAN UN-FOLLOW RULES OF WEDDING FASHION
Sonam does all kinds of fashion perfectly! Whether it’s the traditional Indian look, the sexy gal look in Taareefan from Veere Di Wedding or the quirky look, this fashionista knows it all, and how! Sonam broke the stereotype again this time but choosing an interesting Anamika Khanna ensemble for her wedding reception, and needless to say, she looked lovely! However, what really caught our notice were the white pair of sneakers that Anand Ahuja was sporting, with his regal looking black bandhgala. We aren’t sure how well this will go down with the fashion gods, but full marks for trying to stand out!
