Sonali Bendre has been struggling with cancer in a very brave way. She shared her journey on social media from the moment she was diagnosed with cancer.

On July 4th, last year, Sonali posted a photo of herself with this caption on her Instagram.

“Sometimes, when you least expect it, life throws you a curveball. I have recently been diagnosed with a high grade cancer that has metastised, which we frankly did not see coming. A niggling pain led to some tests, which led to this unexpected diagnosis. My family and close friends have rallied around me, providing the best support system that anyone can ask for. I am very blessed and thankful for each of them. There is no better way to tackle this, than to take swift and immediate action. And so, as advised by my doctors, I am currently undergoing a course of treatment in New York. We remain optimistic and I am determined to fight every step of the way. What has helped has been the immense outpouring of love and support I’ve received over the past few days, for which I am very grateful. I’m taking this battle head on, knowing I have the strength of my family and friends behind me.”

Since then Sonali has been an inspiring figure for many people who have been struggling with this deadly disease.

She spoke at India Conclave 2019 talking about how she chose to tell her son about her sickness.

“I wanted to be charge of my narrative from the start,” said the Hum Saath Saath Hain actress. “When you are a public figure, there are so many narratives that it out there. And suddenly you lose hold of that narrative very quickly.”

Sonali Bendre’s son, Ranveer, was informed by her about her cancer from the get-go.

“Ranveer was on a school trip and I could have sent him back home but I needed to see him. I need to be able to talk to him. That’s the way we have brought him up and we have always been very honest with him,” Sonali said. “The only thing that we were hoping was that by not lying to him, one day he will not be lying to us. That he will be honest with us and that was the example we were trying to set.”
