Socially Distanced Entertainment: UAE Likely to Get Drive-in Cinemas Soon

Drive-in cinemas have become popular around the world due to social distancing. Urban Entertainment Dubai now plans to launch drive-ins in the UAE.

The UAE offers a variety of cinema experiences to movie lovers, such as outdoor cinema, 4D, 5D, iMAX, and various others. Now, according to the latest reports, the country may soon get drive-in cinemas, which have already made a comeback in Germany, the United States and other countries, where families are watching their favourite flicks on giant projectors from the safety of their cars.

As per a report in The National, Urban Entertainment Dubai has been considering the launch of similar drive-in cinemas in the UAE for some time now. With the temporary closure of traditional cinema theatres during the COVID-19 lockdown, drive-in cinemas are likely to be introduced very soon.

The news report quoted Chief Executive of Urban Entertainment Dubai, Michael Hayes as saying that due to the pandemic, these cinemas could become the new norm. Before the spread of the new coronavirus, the company was planning to roll out a 30-day project in Sharjah. This will now be launched once restrictions on outdoor events have been lifted.

In Dubai, Urban Drive-in Cinema will be launched in several locations while the company is looking into the possibility of including more locations in partnership with other brands. It is also considering the possibility of hosting drive-in events in Ras Al Khaimah.

With the freeze on cinema theatres and movie studios due to the current situation, the subscriptions for video streaming services such as Netflix have soared. In April 2020, Netflix announced that 15.8 million people had subscribed to the service in the month of March, double the number predicted by Wall Street analysts. Meanwhile, Disney has postponed the cinema release of some of its highly-anticipated films such as Black Widow, but is planning to release some of its other new movies directly on its newly launched streaming service Disney Plus.
