SKAFOS Review: Let's go the Med Way
A charming restaurant offering great views of the Creek
One of the latest entrants to the Dubai restaurants scene, Skafos is quite charming, primarily because of its location. We are a bit partial to Al Seef eateries, offering great views of the Creek and Skafos, located at the stylish Zabeel House is a good addition. If you are the kind who dislikes noise and crowds or screaming patrons and loud music, then this place is for you. But if you are the sort who loves the hustle and bustle of a busy brunch, you might be a tad disappointed.
At Skafos, the focus is solely on the food. Which is a good thing. But the ‘vibe’ is somewhat missing. Which is a not such a good thing. Snuck in the corner, Skafos reminds you of a simple Mediterranean no-fuss cafeteria you are likely to enter on a trip to Greece or Italy. So in that way, it stays true to its roots and it does so in the menu too which is pretty spot on.
Kale and burnt corn
In the sharing platter for starters, the burrata was fresh, the beef carpaccio was great too but the kale and burnt corn didn’t do much for us, the corn feeling like an unnecessary add-on. The next round was fun. Be it the padron peppers, crispy white bait or the lamb keftedes (small kebabs), each raised a toast to the Mediterranean spirit. We loved that the menu was a perfect and balanced mix of Italian, Spanish and Middle Eastern – which is what the region, where it’s inspired by, all about.
The mains consisted of Paella (hola Spain!) and they were just the way we wanted – flavorful and giving off that homely feel. Paired with light rose, the meal just made you feel light and nice. Round it off with churros and lemon tart. The portions are just right so you will feel satisfied at the end of it all, without feeling guilty about over-eating.
But we still suggest, you give the other summer promotions that are currently on, a chance. From Mussel nights on Mondays to Paella and Sangrias on Wednesdays to other Happy Hour discounts, they have a lot going on. That's not all. Both Skafos and Saba’a restaurants at Zabeel House will be serving special Saudi Arabian dishes and offer exclusively for KSA nationals at a special discount of 20 per cent between September 22nd till 28th, 2019 to celebrate Saudi National Day. And if a trek to Al Seef is on the agenda on any day of the week, you now know where to stop for a drink, a bite or a nice meal.
