Sidharth Malhotra Opens Up About Playing Captain Vikram Batra in Upcoming Biopic
Sidharth Malhotra, who will play Captain Vikram Batra in a biopic, has said that he wants the film to go beyond being a box office success, and for it to honour the memory of the ‘Shershaah’.
India celebrated 20 years of Kargil over the weekend and Bollywood actor Sidharth Malhotra paid tribute to Captain Vikram Batra of the Indian Army who died while recapturing Indian territories from Pakistan during the Kargil War in 1999. Sidharth will be assuming the character of Captain Vikram Batra in the biopic “Shershaah.” Batra was referred as Sher Shah (Lion King) because of his bravery. While commenting on his role in the film, Malhotra said, “I want to make the martyr’s family happy by doing full justice to his role in the biopic ‘Shershaah’.”
Captain Batra is considered a Kargil hero who was awarded India’s highest war-time gallantry award. Malhotra added that, “It’s not easy to step into the shoes of Vikram Batra and it’s a huge responsibility on his shoulders. More than interesting, it is more of a responsibility to bring back his glory on screen. He sacrificed his life for our nation, so I can never take this project for granted. I met his parents and his brother -- they are so attached to him emotionally. I hope I don't let them down. Apart from business aspect, I hope we make a film that does justice to Mr. Batra's glory and eventually makes his family happy.”
The film is being produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and is directed by Vishnu Varadhan whereas the story is written by Sandeep Srivastava. Yuvan Shankar Raja has composed the music for “Shershaah” which also features Kiara Advani starring in a lead role opposite Malhotra. The film was announced on 2 May 2019, by Johar on his Twitter account. Malhotra began military training for the film on 17 April 2019. The photography commenced on 7 May 2019 and will be shot in Chandigarh, Palampur, Kashmir and Ladakh.
