After raising concerns with scenes where a Sikh character was seen smoking in Manmarziyaan, Aanand L Rai has found himself in choppy waters yet again for offending Sikhs because of a certain scene in the promo of Zero.
The trailer shows Shah Rukh Khan wearing the ‘Gatra Kirpaan’ (Item of Sikh Faith) a dagger extremely sacred to the Sikhs. This has offended a few members of the Sikh Sangat who complained to the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC).
The general secretary Manjinder Singh Sirsa said, “I have received a number of complaints from the Sikh Sangat for hurting the sentiments of the Sikhs by movie Zero directed by Aanand L Rai. In the film, Shah Rukh Khan has been shown wearing “Gatra Kirpaan” (Article of Sikh Faith) and their movie promo has created outrage among Sikh community worldwide”.
He has filed a complaint against Shah Rukh Khan and Aanand L Rai at a Delhi police station for the same, demanding that that particular scene and poster be withdrawn.
"As per the Sikh rules, only Amritdhari Sikh person can wear the Kirpaan. You are requested to lodge an FIR against Aanand L Rai and actor Shah Rukh Khan and are also requested to stop the promo of the Zero movie, showing Shah Rukh Khan wearing ‘Gatra Kirpaan’".
The representatives of the film gave a clarification saying their intention was not to degrade the ‘Gata Kirpaan’ because the image seen in the trailer is not a Kirpaan although Shah Rukh and Rai are yet to present their stand on the matter.
Here is a Twitter thread exchange between the general secretary of the Sikh community and the representatives of the film-
I have written a letter to actor of @Zero21Dec @iamsrk & director @aanandlrai to withdraw the objectionable scene and poster showing Kirpaan as ordinary dagger— Manjinder S Sirsa (@mssirsa) November 5, 2018
Filed a complaint as well as this promotion hurts Sikh sentiments pic.twitter.com/yuTpVPLfij
We are writing on behalf of the makers of the Film, Zero. Your concern is duly noted and we wish to respectfully clarify that the film does not depict a Kirpan. The film makers have been careful not to hurt the feelings of any community including the Sikh community. (1/2)— Spice (@SpiceSocial1) November 5, 2018
Your point is well taken. However, any misrepresentation related to Sikhism will hurt Sikh sentiments.— Manjinder S Sirsa (@mssirsa) November 5, 2018
So we expect a public statement from Film producers and @iamsrk clarifying your stance that this is not depicted as Kirpaan https://t.co/27hIcojf89
