Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chilies Entertainment is all set to produce a feature film based on the iconic character of Bob Biswas, a cold-blooded contract killer from Vidya Balan’s 2012 thriller film Kahaani. The role was played by Bengali actor Saswata Chatterjee, whose performance left a deep impact on the audience despite the limited screen time his character had in the movie. Shah Rukh Khan and Red Chilies Entertainment shared the news of the new Bob Biswas movie on social media, writing, “Nomoshkar! Thrilled to announce our upcoming film, #BobBiswas in association with Bound Script Production; starring @juniorbachchan and directed by Diya Annapurna Ghosh. @gaurikhan @iamsrk @sujoy_g @_GauravVerma.”

The news was shared along with a photo of SRK posing with Abhishek Bachchan. While fans were thrilled at seeing the announcement of a full length movie on the psychotic killer, not all were happy that Abhishek would be playing this role. They took to social media to share their disappointment and some funny reactions:

Posting a still from Kahaani, which shows a poker-faced Bob Biswas holding his phone, Drama@ueen (@Bolly_drama) tweeted, “This is my #BobBiswas forever.”

Sharing the same picture, Harsh (@SmilingLadka) wrote, “Saswata Chatterjee deserves to be on his own #BobBiswas movie.”

Some people were of the view that the origin story of Bob Biswas would be similar to the origin story of iconic villain Joker. Sharing a still from the 2019 movie Joker, where the psychopathic clown (Joaquin Phoenix) can be seen dancing, Shubham (@iconic_shubham) tweeted, “#BobBiswas Abhishek Bachchan right now.”

Apoorv Sharma (@IamApoorvSharma) also shared a picture of Saswata Chatterjee and said, “Bhai ye wala #BobBiswas kahan hai? Replacing him with Abhishek Bachchan is like fitting a Tata Nano engine inside a F1 race vehicle.”

Rajib Bhakat (@bhakatrajiv) responded to the news with, “WHY GOD WHY? last time @juniorbachchan played an eccentric character we got the supremely boring 'Raavan'. But Alas Nepotism! ...How many chances?? The Actor #SaswataChatterjee who made the character iconic was he even considered for the role? @sujoy_g.”

Ajay.agarwal (@TheAjayAgarwal) shared alternative ideas for the film, “I wouldn't mind @juniorbachchan starring in a Bob Biswas movie playing himself, where Bob Biswas played by Saswata, finds and kills him. Also, Kartik Aryaan! #BobBiswas.”

ANUMOHAN (@AnumohanG) wrote, “So after song remixes... New trend is character remixes.... #BobBiswas #LossofCreativity.”

The Transponster (@Biblio_phagist), tweeting a photo from Kahaani, said, “THIS is the only Bob Biswas I know. How dare they try to recreate a menacing creepy murderer as iconic as him! I am offended. #BobBiswas.”

Ipsita Sarkar (@Piercingharmony) also expressed her disappointment, “You hired Abhishek to play Saswata's role.. Seriously! I can't even.... #BobBiswas #theend.”

Anmol Jamwal (@jammypants4) wrote, “I honestly feel bad for #SaswataChatterjee upon hearing the news of #BobBiswas getting its own spin off! A character, with such limited screen time had such a lasting impact with audiences as the antagonist. I guess it’s the sad reality of pitching a scalable film!”

Bob Biswas has been described as a ‘national obsession’. In a 2012 article on the character for Firstpost, Sourav Majumdar had written, “Long used to burly, tough and violent looking men playing such parts, Indian cinema has not been used to a hitman who is unassuming and benign on the outside, but ruthless and devilish on the inside. In fact, in one sequence, the unfit Biswas nearly collapses out of fatigue when being chased by police through the bylanes of Kolkata. This is not your usual hired assassin, by any stretch.” It remains to be seen whether Abhishek Bachchan will be able to bring the complex character to life with the same level of subtlety and brilliance.
