Shah Rukh Khan is known as the Badshah of Bollywood or King Khan but even the king has had to face massive disappointments at the box office. The last two years, 2017-2018 have been a pretty average year of SRK as two of his biggest films flopped (Jab Harry Met Sejal and Zero). Here are some of the biggest flops of Shah Rukh Khan. Brace yourself, there might be some surprise entrants on this list. The movies have not been arranged according to box office collection because it spans more than a decade. However, the films have been arranged according to approximate collections in descending order and year of release.
1. Jab Harry Met Sejal (2017):
This Imtiaz Ali directorial venture starred Anushka Sharma and was promoted well but the bad storyline couldn't garner interest at the box office.
2. Fan (2016):
This experimental movie featured a double role of Shah Rukh Khan where one played the good guy and another, the bad. Yet it couldn't manage beyond the first week.
3. Zero (2018):
There was a lot of interest for this movie as it was high on VFX and Shah Rukh was playing a dwarf. Every scene had to be shot thrice because of the elaborate VFX that was needed for every frame. However, the story didn’t appeal to the viewers at all and even critics gave it a thumbs down. Moreover, Ranveer Singh’s Simmba came just two weeks later and completely drowned Zero.
4. Billu (2009):
The film had a lot of special appearances from the heroines like Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone. But this Priyadarshan movie that was a remake of a Malayalam film didn’t do well at all.
5. Paheli (2005):
It was one of those movies that where Shah Rukh experimented with his looks and played a villager in Rajasthan. It co-starred Rani Mukerji and was directed by Amol Palekar. The narrative didn't gel with the audience and it neither turned out to be a commercial potboiler nor a meaningful indie.
6. Swades (2004):
The film was inspired by the NRI duo Aravinda Pillalamarri and Ravi Kuchimanchi the NRI couple who returned to India and developed the pedal power generator. It is considered to be one of his best performances but when it released the movie didn’t do any wonders at the box office. Today it’s considered a cult classic.
7. Asoka (2002):
Directed and co-written by Santosh Sivan, this film is loosely based on the legendary historical king Asoka. This was probably the first time SRK was trying a historical but there were no takers despite the beautiful music, Kareena Kapoor’s scintillating presence and the hype around it.
8. One Two Ka Four (2001):
One 2 Ka 4 is a Bollywood crime drama film directed by Shashilal K. Nair. It didn’t work at the box office.
9. Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (2000):
This was Shah Rukh Khan's last production with Juhi Chawla post which saw the birth of his new production house Red Chillies. This was a fun film that brought the Yes Boss team together. However, this purported satire based on media did average business.
10. Koyla (1997):
Some say this movie did average business but didn't sustain the hype that was created around it.
Other early films of Shah Rukh Khan that flopped: King Uncle (1993), Maya Memsaab (1993), Zamana Deewana (1995), Oh Darling Yeh Hai India (1995), English Babu Desi Mem (1996), Chaahat (1996), Yeh Lamhe Judai Ke (2004), Shakti-The Power (2002).
