Surrogacy and adoption are a common phenomenon in the West. However, it was not until too long ago that both forms of having children were looked down upon in desi societies, with natural birth being the only ‘normal’ route to raising offspring. With spreading awareness and broadening mindsets of people today, the stereotypical way of thinking has taken a back seat with more and more people opting for more modernised procedures like IVF, surrogacy and adoption. Bollywood stars have not been left behind in this race either, with many including the likes of Sushmita Sen, Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar and Ekta Kapoor having chosen the path less travelled. Here is a list of celebrities who have either adopted children or had them through surrogacy.

1. Aamir Khan

The Dangal star was previously married to film producer Reena Dutta and had two children with her, Junaid and Ira Khan. However, when matters between them took a sour turn, the now estranged couple parted ways forever in 2004. He then tied the knot with Kiran Rao and the duo has been going strong ever since. The duo took the step to produce a baby through IVF surrogacy procedure. Their mutually agreed upon decision was lauded by their fans and industry insiders alike. After opting for the surrogacy route, Aamir and Kiran were blessed with a baby boy, Azad in 2011.

2. Lisa Ray

The starlet, who fought and defeated cancer by 2010, became the mother of two daughters, Sufi and Soleil at the age of 46. While she could give birth naturally, Lisa also chose to have her children through surrogacy.

3. Tusshar Kapoor

The actor – who still remains single – always dreamt of having children. The 42-year-old has never had the desire to take the plunge into marriage and so he decided to have a child through surrogacy. He now has a baby boy Lakshya Kapoor, whom he calls the centre of his world. Currently, the Mastizaade actor is happily living his life with his parents and son.

4. Ekta Kapoor

Following in her brother's footsteps, the ace TV producer also welcomed baby boy Ravie Kapoor on January 27, 2019 through surrogacy. Ekta is known to love kids and often posts fun pictures and videos with her nephew and Tusshar’s son. Ekta has mentioned earlier how she is not ready for marriage but has always been excited to embrace motherhood with all its highs and lows. She recently spoke about the struggles of being a mother and having to balance her personal and professional life but nevertheless called the experience a blessing!

5. Karan Johar

The renowned filmmaker made headlines when he announced he was having twins through surrogacy. While he was heavily criticised by some, Karan remained unfettered and went ahead with his decision. In 2018, he brought his kids home and named them Yash and Roohi. From Deepika Padukone to Alia Bhatt, Bollywood starlets are gaga for Karan’s babies and have been captured taking pictures with them.

6. Shah Rukh Khan

King Khan’s youngest son AbRam was also born via surrogacy. SRK and his wife Gauri Khan, who were already parents to son Aryan and daughter Suhana, opted for surrogacy for their third child in 2013. The older siblings love and pamper their youngest baby to no extent. While he’s the apple of everyone’s eye, AbRam is now six years old. Gauri recently posted a picture of her three children seated on a boat and captioned it, “My hearts.”

7. Farah Khan

The Bollywood choreographer and director got married to editor and director Shirish Kunder in her 40s. The couple reportedly tried for two years for a baby but failed to conceive. Finally, she decided to go through with IVF and was elated with the procedure. Farah gave birth to triplets on February 11, 2008. Her children’s names are Diva, Czar and Anya.

8. Sunny Leone

Sunny took everyone by surprise when she announced that she and her husband Daniel Weber had adopted girl child Nisha in 2017. Another announcement unfolded in March 2018, when she shared that they had extended their family by including two more children — sons Noah and Asher — via surrogacy. Hence, the starlet has chosen both options – adoption and surrogacy – and is now blessed with a complete and happy family! Sunny is often spotted picking and dropping her babies to and from school and is a devoted mama!

9. Sohail Khan

Actor and director Sohail Khan was blessed with a son Nirvaan with his wife Seema Khan. But reports suggest that when Salman Khan’s younger brother wanted a second child, Seema refused to conceive naturally after 10 years of the birth of their first child. In June 2011, they had Yohan, after Seema opted for surrogacy.

10. Sushmita Sen

The former Miss Universe has been vocal about staying away from the institution of marriage. While her current romance with Rohman Shawl is the talk of the town now, Sushmita embraced motherhood at the age of 24 when she adopted her first daughter Renee. She was one of the first Indian celebrities to adopt a child outside of marriage. And not one, but two! At 34, Sushmita adopted her second child Alisah, also a girl. The actor recently spoke about it being her wisest decision ever, slamming those who feel adoption is an act of charity.

All these proud parents make the world a better place. They prove that children are the happiness in the lives of their parents. They also prove that women can still be blessed with the opportunity to have kids even if they have trouble conceiving. And kudos to each of them!
