Shah Rukh Khan has been denied a second PhD degree from his alma mater Jamia Milia University. The university had wanted to award the doctorate degree to Shah Rukh Khan because he was enrolled as a master’s degree student in the same university.

Shah Rukh Khan had also agreed to receive the degree stating that "it would be an honour".

The university has also revealed that contrary to public opinion Shah Rukh didn't complete his master’s degree because he couldn't take the final exams because of lack of class attendance.

In the Indian university system, a 75% attendance in class is necessary to appear for the final degree exam. Below, 50% attendance means his year will be forfeited. Apparently, Shah Rukh Khan had below 50% attendance.

Shah Rukh Khan was a master’s student of Jamia’s AJK Mass Communication Research Centre from 1988-90, but could not appear for his final year exams due to a shortage of attendance.

He has also received an honorary doctorate from Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad.

There were two facts that were apparently considered while denying the doctorate degree to him.

The Indian Express has learnt that Jamia wrote to Khan on January 30, 2018, stating that he was the “most prestigious alumnus” of the university and that they wished to confer him with an “Honoris Causa” (honorary doctorate) to “strengthen ties”. They said they were waiting for the HRD Ministry’s approval, following which the degree would be awarded in February.

Khan’s consent was received via an email dated February 17, 2018, in which one of his assistant’s said: “it will be an honour to accept this”.

However, soon the University decides to backtrack on the offer because there was no government nod.

“It has been observed that Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad has already conferred Honorary degree on Shri Shah Rukh Khan in December 2016. Therefore, a view has been taken that two doctorate degrees for the same person would not be in order,” the government apparent told the University, as per an RTI (Right to Information Query) enquiry.

In its official response to an RTI query, Jamia also stated: “JMI wrote to HRD for conferring Honoris Causa to Mr Shah Rukh Khan. The MHRD does not agree to confer Honoris Causa to Mr Shah Rukh Khan as MANUU has already conferred the Honoris Causa to him in 2016.”
