Deepika Padukone will be transforming into an acid attack survivor in the upcoming film Chhapaak. She will be playing the role of ‘Malti’ a young woman whose life is based on acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. Laxmi Agarwal was attacked when she was just fifteen and Chhapaak tells her story. The film will be directed by Meghna Gulzar and will be seen in theatres by January 2020. While this is Deepika Padukone’s most dramatic transformation yet, here are all the times the actress has really gotten into her character and changed the way she appeared onscreen.
1. Om Shanti Om
In her very first Hindi film, Deepika Padukone played two diametrically opposite characters. She appeared as an actress of the yesteryear, Shanti Priya, who was dressed like a glamor icon of the sixties. Shanti Priya was stylish, poised and the character had a very dramatic arc. In the second half of the film, she appeared as an urban young woman who was ditzy, clumsy and hopelessly in love with superstar Om Kapoor (Shah Rukh Khan).
Directed by Shoojit Sircar, Deepika dressed down for this film on a whole different level. She appeared as a young woman who barely wore any makeup and was not seen sporting any glamorous outfits.
3. Happy New Year
Even though Happy New Year was a slapstick comedy film, Deepika Padukone’s role was a slightly challenging one. She had to change her accent and her mannerisms to suit the role of a working class girl who had bad English.
4. Chennai Express
Deepika was a pro in changing accents in this film. She appeared as a Tamilian girl who spoke Hindi with difficulty. Deepika’s role was widely praised by critics and some even said she outshone Shah Rukh Khan himself.
5. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
In this coming-of-age film, Deepika also essayed two different personalities. In one half of the film she plays ‘topper Naina’ who is a nerd. In the second half of the film she appears as an elegant woman of the world.
6. Goliyon Ki Raas Leela-Ram Leela
Deepika Padukone’s role in this film was a very high-powered, stylish role but it had elements to the character itself that required Deepika to appear as never before. Leela was a rural, firecracker Juliet who literally wasn’t afraid of firing her guns at anyone. Her performance in Goliyon Ki Raas Leela - Ram Leela received much acclaim as well.
7. Chandni Chowk to China
Starring opposite Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone danced in Chinese attire and transformed into oriental looks.
