There is an intrinsic emotion in all gems, but none are quite like a ruby. It is the colour of love and passion… from fiery scarlet to bold maroons, it has often evoked a dire sense of romance among many historic legends and continues to extend the same feelings today. Gemfields, the trailblazer of ethically sourced stones, delves into the feminine passion of the stone, in its series of short movies, shot by Leonora Lonsdale, who explores ruby-inspired “Prosperity,” with Aditi Rao Hydari who dons the “Aya” and “Gyan” pieces from their collection. 1. Tell us about what was going through your head as you shot the “Protection” campaign for Gemfields.
The Gemfields Ruby Stories campaign came from the idea of there being ‘a story in every gemstone’ and particular, the traditional associations’ people have with rubies – Passion, Prosperity and Protection. I was so glad to be a part of the campaign and the Protection story especially. My character is finding her way in life and at a moment when she feels she needs guidance, her grandmother appears to her, offering reassurance. Her ruby necklace becomes a talisman, offering her the protection she feels she needs to live her independent life.

2. Tell us about your emotional connection to rubies.
Jewellery has always played a large part in our culture and my family is no exception. I think every girl when growing up dreams of dressing up and wearing beautiful gemstone jewellery and certainly did! I am very lucky in that I am offered the opportunity to wear incredible pieces. Rubies have a very special place in my heart as they have a depth – both in appearance and in meaning. Wearing them is a very special experience.
