David Dhawan -- who has helmed many hit comedy movies during the ‘90s -- is directing the remake of his 1995 superhit comedy film Coolie No. 1, with Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan in the lead roles, originally played by Govinda and Karisma Kapoor. The original film follows the story of a coolie (Govinda) who falls in love with a rich girl (Karisma) but the girl’s father disapproves of their match. Filming of the remake started in Bangkok in August 2019 and the film is scheduled for theatrical release in India on 1st May 2020.
Sara - who made her debut last year with Abhishek Kapoor’s Kedarnath, opposite Sushant Singh Rajput, and also appeared in Rohit Shetty’s Simmba alongside Ranveer Singh - spoke about her new role and the film in an interview. She said it was “going to be difficult because the film, the songs and everything related to that film is iconic.”
Discussing the secret to the wonderful chemistry between Govinda and Karisma in the original, she said, “What makes Govinda ji and Karisma ji so iconic was an element of spontaneity and ‘bindasspan’ with every take, every shot. They had so much fun while shooting and that translates on screen. These are big shoes to fill.” However, Sara added that if they gave into pressure, they would “definitely mess up” and also added that she could take tips directly from Karisma Kapoor in order to portray the character well. Apart from Coolie No. 1, Sara will also be seen in the sequel of Imtiaz Ali’s 2009 film Love Aaj Kal, opposite Kartik Aaryan. Tentatively titled Love Aaj Kal 2, the film is based on modern love and relationships. Its shooting has already been completed and the romantic drama will hit the screens on Valentine’s Day in 2020.
