Prassthanam is a political-action film, which was released on 20th September 2019. The movie stars Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff, Manisha Koirala, Chunky Pandey, Ali Fazal, Satyajeet Dubey and Amyra Dastur in lead roles. Directed by Dev Katta, the film was leaked online by film piracy website Tamilrockers, within a day of its release. This website is in breach of copyright laws and illegally hosts movies on its platform, which keeps running, despite court bans, due to frequent changes in domain extensions and easy access through proxy servers. The site has hundreds or movies, TV shows and web series in its collection, which can be streamed and downloaded quite easily by the site’s users.

Prassthanam was already facing a tough time at the box office, as there were two other releases that weekend: Sonam Kapoor and Dulquer Salman’s The Zoya Factor, and Karan Deol’s debut film Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas. The film also faced tough competition from Ayushmann Khurrana’s Dream Girl, which has turned out to be a blockbuster since its release on 13th September.

The film is still running in theatres but reviews of Prassthanam have also not helped its popularity at the ticket windows. Udita Jhunjhunwala wrote in Firspost, “The style of the film veers from domestic soap opera to dramatic crime and action stitched together by political drama. Structured like a Shakespearean tragedy, Prassthanam is built on countless conflicts, awash with textbook characters and dated in its story-telling.” Vinayak Chakravorty, reviewing it for India New England News, gave it 2.5 stars and said, “Like everything in commercial cinema that has a Telugu hangover, director Deva Katta’s film is played out with over-the-top flourish. Even by mainstream standards, this mix of heavy melodrama and violence, supplemented by heavier dialoguebaazi, seems jaded now.”
