Pakistani’s first ever digital talk show, Rewind with Samina Peerzada, is hosted by the acclaimed Pakistani actress Samina Peerzada who has been in the industry since 1982. Recently, the actress was seen making problematic comments about depression and mental health counselling on her show.

Depression and Counselling, topics very important in the world of today, were discussed on the show on the latest episode of Rewind with Samina Peerzada. Actor Affan Waheed, who was the guest on the show, opened up about his divorce and fighting through depression in the first half of the show.

However, the second half of the episode had the host make problematic and inappropriate comments about the mental health problems.

It all started with, Samina and Affan discussing how difficult it is for the actors to leave behind the characters they have played and how psychologically exhausting acting is as a profession. "If you're conscious you might not have to go to a shrink but people abroad go because they don't have friends who they can talk to or parents they're close to. Everyone is living alone,” the host said.

While, peers and family support is important, making an assumption that community can replace the need for professional help is an unsafe comment to make, that too on a public platform. This comment shows lack of understanding and awareness on the host’s part about a very important matter.

The fact that depression is the leading cause of disability in the world, it is vital we remove the stigma from discussing these problems and raise awareness of mental health issues. Especially, in countries where there is little to no access to mental health services.

Many mental health professionals’ advice people to open up to their friends and family about their struggles and discuss what’s on their mind. Having said this, it is also advised to seek professional help – unlike family members or friends, professionals will stay objective and not let any emotion cloud their judgements about one’s mental health.

Contrary to what the host thinks about the struggles with mental health, Affan’s take on mental illness in the first half of the show was very different. Speaking about fighting depression, the actor said, “We need to talk about depression. It is real. It can be a chemical imbalance and you need to go to a doctor. There is no need to worry about what people will say or whether they'll call me crazy. It's important to go to a doctor."

We can’t agree more.

Previously, actors like Mahira Khan, Meesha Shafi and Mohsin Abbas Haider have also spoken about mental illness and the importance of seeking professional help and talking about it.
