Laal Kaptaan, directed by Navdeep Singh (of NH10 fame), hit the screens on 18th October. The film, set in a chaotic 18th century India, stars Saif Ali Khan as a bounty hunter Naga Sadhu who is on a mission to take revenge from Rehmat Khan (Manav Vij). The film experienced a poor opening on the first day of its release and has received a mixed reaction from critics and fans, although Saif has been lauded for his intense performance in this period revenge drama. Here’s a compilation of some audience reviews of Laal Kaptaan:

NJ (@Nilzrav) said, “On paper, the makers have tried really hard to repeat their previous success with #Tumbbad, but #LaalKaptaan is not even a patch on that masterpiece. It loses grip too soon to wait for the unfoldings. Only the cinematography & locations manage to stand-out. Rating: ⅕ [AVOID].”

Shantanu (@shantanub) was full of praises and wrote, “Absolutely loved #LaalKaptaan. Could have been a tad faster and shorter perhaps. But cracking atmosphere, great locations and Saif is too cool. Well done by Navdeep Singh and Deepak Venkatesha!”

FriendsWood (@FrndzWood) tweeted, “#LaalKaptaan is Getting Average - Below Average Reviews So Far.. Very Low EXPECTATIONS too, as the Advance bookings are less than 10% across India.. Feeling Bad for #SaifAliKhan who has given Heart n Soul to the Film.. Hoping Audience WOM will be Better.”

Bobby Talks Cinema (@bobbytalkscinema) said, “#LaalKaptaan Probably the most weird and directionless project of the year showcasing all its creativity in the posters instead of the film.”

Mahir Tiger (salmantigerian) wrote, “#LaalKaptaan isn’t the type of film to open big, but I must say as a film it’s looking quite good. I hope it will show growth at the BO & become a success. Saif Ali Khan deserves it. Even if it doesn’t next work, Saif’s next films are looking safe & commercial, they should work.”

R! (@WeirdlyProbable), calling it a ‘snoozefest’ tweeted, “#LaalKaptaan suffers from Son Chiraiya syndrome where it focuses more on locations, language & authenticity of characters but very little on pace & screenplay. You can't stretch a predictable revenge saga for that long. Saif & Cinematography are the only Pros in this snoozefest.”

Biswatosh Sinha (@biswatosh) said, “Poor narrative killed the concept. #LaalKaptaan”

Raunaq Mangottil (@RaunaMangottil) was disappointed and wrote, “So badly wanted #LaalKaptaan to be good, and it COULD'VE been a mind-blowing adventure had someone with a mad vision had taken over the post-production phase. Ended up being a bore. Feel so bad for Saif who's experimenting with the right ideas but ends up with mehhh outputs.”

Saiprasad Chavan (@filmy_sai) said, “#Laalkaptaan is an average movie which has a good concept but ruined by its slow, repetitive and boring narrative. Few Scenes, Performances and Cinematography are Praiseworthy. #Saifalikhan gives a solid Performance @deepakdobriyal is Excellent as Well. 2.5 Stars!!”

Some viewers were of the opinion that the film would have worked better as a web series. Rakshith RK (@RK_HUNTER) said, “Zero buzz for #LaalKaptaan
Looks so amazing the trailer n other stuffs. God save this film. I like the theme but this should've been strictly developed for the web and not for the theaters.”

Laal Kaptaan -- which also stars Zoya Hussain, Deepak Dobriyal, Simone Singh, Saurabh Sachdeva, Godaan Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha -- is set  25 years after the Battle of Buxar, when the East India Company was gaining dominance in India. It has been seen as a combination of the director’s love for Westerns and for India’s colonial history. Film critics have blamed the film’s story and screenplay for its lack of impact. It remains to be seen how the largely negative word-of-mouth will impact the film’s performance in the upcoming week.
