Cancer is a disease that sucks the life out of someone. We wouldn’t wish it even on our most hated enemies. The world was shocked when Bollywood’s former heartthrob and blue-eyed boy Rishi Kapoor revealed that he was afflicted by the disease. The Kapoor family kept Rishi’s struggle with Cancer all to themselves for over a year.
Rishi Kapoor flew to New York with wife Neetu Kapoor by his side to get treatment for Cancer. His children Riddhima Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor kept shuttling between US and India ensuring support to their dad but also managing their personal work commitments. Ranbir, infact, kept shutting between the shoots of his film Brahmastra and even postponed plans of moving in with girlfriend Alia Bhatt, to be by his father’s side.
Rishi Kapoor spoke to a leading Bollywood website about his struggle with Cancer. “My eighth month of treatment started on May 1 in the US. But God has been kind! I am in remission, meaning now I am cancer-free.”
However, the actor still will have to undergo couple of tests and procedures. “I will have to do a bone-marrow transplant which in all probability should take another two months minimum, he adds.
But it’s his wife of 39 years whom Rishi Kapoor is specially thankful to. “Neetu has stood by me like a rock. Otherwise, I am too difficult a person to handle as far as food and drink are concerned,” laughs the brilliant actor last seen in the web-feature film Rajma Chawal where he shared a troubled relationship with his screen-son, not unlike the uneasy rapport Rishi shared with his real-life son Ranbir Kapoor until recently.
Rishi’s illness has brought him close to his children like never before. He says emotionally, “My kids Ranbir and Riddhima have really shouldered my problems. Thank you all, thank you the world. “A person like me who has never had patience, this is God’s way to teach me patience. Getting well is a slow procedure. But it makes you grateful for the gift of life.”
Rishi Kapoor was last seen in films such as 102 Not Out with Amitabh Bachchan, the critically acclaimed Mulk and Rajma Chawal, the bittersweet comedy with wife Neetu Kapoor. We wish for a speedy recovery to the actor extra-ordinaire.
