Ricky Gervais' Epic Golden Globe 2020 Hosting - Here's How Social Media Loved the Roast

Ricky Gervais’ monologue at the Golden Globes 2020 were lauded by many as he called out celebrities

The Golden Globes took the world by storm. The ceremony saw the likes of Tom Hanks and Ellen DeGeneres being honoured for their contribution to the world of film and TV, whereas Fleabag’s Phoebe-Waller Bridge announced the auction of her outfit for victims of the Australian bushfires. Joker’s Joaquin Phoenix called out Hollywood celebrities for talking about climate change but not doing anything about it and continuing to use private jets which instead contribute to the deteriorating environment. While the stars did share their concerns, host Ricky Gervais seemed to be the one who stole the show.

The comedian, in his monologue, warned the celebrities that if they win an award, they should just come to the stage and accept it without making any political speeches, because, in his words, they “know nothing about the real world”. Gervais’ monologue received a huge amount of praise on social media.

One user wrote, “Ricky Gervais literally used comedy for its purpose. Like to a T. He executed what it was made for. And I didn’t even watch it.”

Another added, “My favourite part was when you told them not to give their opinions on political matters because they know nothing about the real world! I'd say that stung.”

Actor Kevin Sorbo shared, “Bravo to Gervais. The only thing worth watching on The Globes was his opening monologue.”

One commented, “One single tweet of Ricky Gervais' opening monologue had more viewership than the entire viewership of Golden Globes.”

Anothed added, “I don’t care what political leanings Ricky Gervais has.  His monologue was funny.  Why do politics have to be the criteria on whether we like something or not?  He is a comedian.  A comedian makes jokes.  Last night his jokes were on fire.  End of story.”

One wrote, “I mean after that speech, Ricky Gervais for Prime Minister. It’s the last time I don’t care.”

Another shared, “Joaquin Phoenix’s speech and Ricky Gervais’ monologue were the only realistic and amazing highlights of the Golden Globes. And to be played off while Joaquin was giving the most important message about celebrities using private Jets and coming to stage and talking about climate change. Like really? These guys were the most true and honest about everything they said. Joaquin also talked about vegan food at the Golden Globes instead of meat this year and it was important, since it is one of the biggest cause of climate change today. Ricky ripping every fake thing and shenanigans about Hollywood in his monologue was a deal to watch.”

One wrote, “Ricky Gervais is my new favorite celebrity. This is so cool!”

Another remarked, “I guess Ricky Gervais just put everything into context they just actors why should everything they say and think be our mantra for living, they only there because of us mere mortals.”

One shared, “Entertainment is about just that. Entertain, not lecture others about your politics.”

Another had a small request. “If there will be a chance, will you attend as a Oscars’ host?”

One tweeted, “Celebrities getting rid of their world changing Golden Globe speeches after Ricky Gervais opens the show.”

Another shared, “Ricky Gervais, thanks for telling them what most of us were thinking.”

One said, “Savage, brilliant and spot on!”

Another wrote, “You hit it out of the park on the Golden Globes Awards; a grand slam. You said what we think. Thank you! My wife wanted to watch it, I refuse to give them the ratings. We are done with the Hollywood elite. We have given up many TV shows as they pitch their narratives.”

One shared, “Ricky Gervais’ great monologue probably just destroyed any future movie deals from Hollywood.”

Another concluded, “First time I ever watched! Best award show ever, because of Ricky Gervais  - much better than the Oscars. Faster, funnier, more interesting.”
