Over the last few years, the incidence of Diabetes has increased tremendously in the Middle East as it has across the world. A sedentary lifestyle, stress, unhealthy eating habits etc are primarily responsible for the diseases being this widespread these days. According to the International Diabetes Federation’s Diabetes Atlas, this ‘lifestyle disease’ affects an estimated 745,000 residents in this region alone. But the good news is that if detected early, the condition can be managed effectively and at times, even reversed. So what’s the way to combat it? One, by creating awareness about the disease and two, by making a firm resolve to bring healthy changes to one’s daily habits.
In this direction, the Landmark Group, one of the leading retail and hospitality conglomerate, is organising its sixth annual Beat Diabetes Walkathon on 12th December, 2014 at the Zabeel Park in Dubai. Launched in 2009 in UAE, the campaign has a presence across 7 countries – UAE, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, KSA and India.
The walkathon will encourage people to monitor blood glucose levels through regular screening and inspire them to eat healthy and stay active through information driven activities. Covering a span of approximately three kilometres around the Zabeel Park boundary, the event will have a host of family-oriented activities featuring games, health food kiosks, free blood glucose screening and live entertainment.
If you want to be a part of this fun yet very useful programme, all you need to do is register on www.beatdiabetes.me from November 7 to December 6. There will be a nominal participation fee of Dhs 20 per adult and Dhs 10 per child and all registered participants will receive a walkathon kit which will include a Beat Diabetes T-shirt, cap and walk sticker. These will be delivered to them via courier. Children below the age of eight can sign up for free! So gear up to shed some flab, enjoy a good walk on a crisp winter morning and create awareness about a life-threatening disease along the way!
