As every year nears its end, renowned celebrities reflect on their thoughts, memorable moments and sentiments about the roller-coaster ride the year brought with it. 2019 flew by in a breeze and the upcoming January 1st will not only be the start of a New Year but also the end of a decade. Need we say, everyone has high hopes for 2020! This is the time when filmmakers, actors, musicians and other entertainment personalities weigh in on different aspects of their profession. In the same way, director, producer and writer Hansal Mehta has conveyed his views in a string of Twitter posts. Best known for his projects Shahid, Citylights, Aligarh and Omertà, his films often depict social and political realities. While he may not be the top of the top, everyone has their own opinion and his was just slammed by Kangana Ranaut’s sister and activist Rangoli Chandel.
Since everybody has a list I have one too. My 10 memorable Hindi films of this decade. It's a lazy list in no particular order straight from memory. Pardon any omissions...— Hansal Mehta (@mehtahansal) November 22, 2019
a death in the gunj
It is very much acceptable and legitimate to say my favourite performances but when some fraud says here’s greatest performances ever listed my ‘ME’ isn’t acceptablehttps://t.co/eY6UQrRahz— Rangoli Chandel (@Rangoli_A) November 22, 2019
Hansal took a trip down memory lane as he recalled the actors whose performances he loved between the years 2010 and 2019. His list included names like Irrfan Khan, Manoj Bajpayee, Rajkummar Rao, Ayushmann Khurana, Ranveer Singh, Vidya Balan, Kangana Ranaut, Tabu, Pankaj Tripathi, Seema B Pahwa, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra and Sanjay Mishra. He then listed down his 10 most memorable Hindi films of the past decade. Since everybody has a list I have one too. My 10 memorable Hindi films of this decade. It's a lazy list in no particular order straight from memory. Pardon any omissions.” The films included Article 15, Newton, Talvar, Haider, Manmarziyaan, Andhadhun, Lootera, Court, Sonchiriya and A death in the Gunj.
His posts did not sit well with Rangoli. While she appreciated the fact that he took time out to name his favourite performances and films, she took a rather low blow as she called him a fraud and questioned his authority to list down ‘his’ favourites. She tweeted, “It is very much acceptable and legitimate to say my favourite performances but when some fraud says here’s greatest performances ever listed my ‘ME’ isn’t acceptable.” Well, we are not sure what this beef is all about!
Moving on, the filmmaker also spoke about the projects he has released over the last 10 years. Mehta added, “And yes this decade was life-changing for me. Shahid gave me a new life, a voice and @RajkummarRao. Citylights gave me @Patralekhaa9 and a chance to take my immigrant story further. Aligarh with @BajpayeeManoj and some fantastic collaborators made me so proud.” He continued, “Simran promised an exhilarating experience and soon became a frustrating but important test of my endurance. Then came Omerta which will always be a film that I will take great pride in and a film that I know will eventually get its due.” Mehta concluded by being thankful for the decade, the lessons he learnt and everyone who was by his side. “I await the new beginnings in the new decade. So many friends, collaborators and family members to thank for being pillars of support through an eventful decade.”
