Currently serving a jail sentence for failing to pay up legitimate dues, comedian Rajpal Yadav seems to have settled in Tihar Jail. Initial reports said that the actor had gone into depression after being jailed. Recently Rajpal performed a stand-up comedy as a jail inmate, a first as a Bollywood actor.
According to jail authorities, Rajpal performed the act as part of a poet's meet or Kavi Sammelan which is part of a routine programme for the entertainment of prisoners. A Hindustan Times report quotes a jail officer, who called his act a "laugh riot" and has further been quoted as saying, "There were several poets on the stage but Yadav made sure everyone laughed. Everyone was awestruck to see a celebrity on stage."
The officer further added that Yadav, who has been lodged in jail number 7, is keeping "everyone in good humour" and another senior officer revealed that the actor will also be directing a play for Christmas. The superintendent of jail number 7, Joginder Singh Sehrawat told Times Now that the actor's conduct has been good. He has been quoted as saying, "He has not made any demands or asked to be treated differently. He spends his time in the library. We treat him like any other prisoner.”
Rajpal Yadav will spend a total of three months in jail for failing to pay up a loan during the shoot of his film, Ata, Pata Lapata.
