Rahul Sharma on the painful break-up that left him battling with depression
The Pyar Ki Luka Chuppi star opens up about his mental health struggles
TV actor, Rahul Sharma has opened up about his four year depression battle that was sparked by a bad break-up.
Speaking to the E Times he said, “For three years, I was in a relationship with an actress. I don’t want to name her, because she is married now. We broke up in 2016, as we realised that we wanted different things from life. I never thought that we would split, because we had both given it our best, but finally when it happened, I was devastated. I was not able to get over it.”
After rising to fame in the serial Ek Ghar Banaunga the 30 year-old experienced a lull in his career. “After working in many TV shows, people had started recognising my work, but suddenly, everything went downhill. In the entertainment industry, uncertainty is the only certain thing and everyone goes through it. I used to get selected for TV shows, but in the end, I would be replaced by someone else. It became a pattern and I was replaced in almost five shows. This was also the time when I was going through a bad phase in my relationship.
Reaching his lowest point, Rahul released he was depressed. “After a few months, I realised that I was suffering from depression. Even in my sleep, I used to choke on my tears and I would wake up crying. It would take me hours to calm down. Finally, I decided to take charge of my own life.”
Taking recovery into his own hands Rahul shares, “I started working out regularly and transformed myself physically within six months. I also started focusing on my career. Soon, I was looking 10 years younger, but feeling wiser. After around two years of my break-up, I was a new man. I realised that life is not about just a break-up or losing out on one or two TV shows. Life is much more and I needed to rise above all this.”
Since his role on Pyar Ki Luka Chuppi, (which has begun shooting again after the lockdown) many fans have speculated on a potential romance between Rahul and co-star Aparna Dixit. Addressing the rumours Rahul said, “Aparna and I belong to small towns in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, respectively. We connect well, because both of us hail from humble backgrounds and have made it on our own. We are linked up, as our on-screen chemistry is good, but there is no truth to it. We are good friends as of now, but we don’t know what destiny has in store for us.”
Talking about his relationship goals he said, “I want to start looking for a companion only after knowing that I am mentally ready for it. Now, if I find someone, it will be for marriage; I am not looking for a frivolous relationship.”
