There are very few musicians like him in contemporary Bollywood. With a solid base in classical music, he has also managed to create a place for himself among the young generation. There is good news for Rahat fans in Dubai as the maestro is headed here for another concert after a gap of almost a year. Organised by Purple Vogue events, this is the grand finale of Rahat’s sold-out World Tour which has seen him perform in various cities across the world, including USA, Canada, UK, Europe and Asia. Rahat, along with his Bollywood hits, will also perform Qawwali and Sufi songs so there is a real treat in store for his fans. Picking our favourite tracks of Rahat from his amazing repertoire is a tough task indeed. However, we have tried to list some gems which we never tire of.
O Re Piya
The movie wasn’t a big hit but it was Rahat’s songs that made this album very special. One number that stands out is the soulful O Re Piya, an ode to the mysterious ways of the heart and unrequited love. Rahat lent this song just the right amount of pathos it required.
Mann Ki Lagan (Paap)
This was the song that brought Rahat into the limelight. One of the maestro’s biggest strengths is that whatever be the fate of the film, his songs are always a hit. The sufi-tinged Mann Ki Lagan from the otherwise forgettable Paap, was a case in point. There is something immensely soothing about Rahat’s voice in this song.
Jag Soona Soona Laage
(Om Shanti Om)
Om Shanti Om had retro tracks, disco songs and peppy, fun numbers. But it was up to Rahat to lend a certain amount of depth to this album with his heartfelt Jag Soona Soona Laage – a song that beautifully spoke about heartbreak. It was slightly higher in pitch which worked wonderfully to convey the protagonist’s state of mind after discovering that the love of his life was in love with someone else.
Rahat made a special appearance as himself in this Irrfan Khan-Soha Ali Khan-Rahul Bose-Konkona Sen Sharma film. A soft tune, this sufi song is ideal for those times when all you want to do is have a wonderful conversation with friends on a nice, wintry evening.
Aaj Din Chadheya (Love Aaj Kal)
This is a song that immediately livens up your mood. Romantic yet soulful, deep yet fun, the lyrics combined with Rahat’s golden voice make for an evergreen number.
