When it comes to talking about films and cinema, Bollywood is one of the biggest industries in the world. For years, viewers have been treated with a number of feature films of different genres. Whether it be romance, action, or comedy, Bollywood has done it all. In recent times, they have also managed to explore the world of sci-fi. And while they might not be up to the Hollywood, they have had their fare share adoration in Bollywood. As the year draws to a close and we hit the big 2020 soon, here is a look back at some of the best sci-fi films produced in Bollywood in the past decade.
Ra.One was released back in 2011 and revolved around the story of video game characters coming to life. Upon his son’s suggestion, Shekhar – essayed by Shah Rukh Khan - designs a video game where the antagonist is more powerful than the protagonist. The launch of the video game takes place which is well-received until things go wrong and the villain of the game, Ra.One comes to life. In order to defeat him, the game’s protagonist, G.One also comes to life. Apart from Shah Rukh, the film also starred Kareena Kapoor Khan and Arjun Rampal in titular roles. Directed by Anubhav Sinha, Ra.One received many awards for having the best special effects in a film.
2. Mission Mangal
Based on the true events of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Mission Mangal revolves around the story of successfully launching the Mars Orbiter Mission - making it the least expensive mission to Mars. A group of scientists, which mostly consists of women, battle their personal and professional lives and work tirelessly towards to make their mission a success. Mission Mangal stars Akshay Kumar opposite a bunch of leading ladies. Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Sonakshi Sinha and Kirti Kulhari along with the likes of Sharman Joshi and Sanjay Kapoor made up the cast of the film. Helmed by Jagan Shakti, Mission Mangal managed to crunch big numbers at the box office when it was released on the Indian Independence Day this year.
3. Krrish 3
In the third installment of Krrish, which released in 2013, Krrish and his father are hell bent on defeating the human-animal mutants which have been created by an evil genius named Kaal. Kaal wants to destroy the world and his army of mutants is led by Kaya – a chameleon mutant. Featured in the film are Hrithik Roshan – who plays Krishna Mehra, Krrish and Rohit Mehra, all the 3 characters – along with Vivek Oberoi, Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut. Directed by Rakesh Roshan, the film also went on to earn many awards for its special effects as well as its action.
One of the best films of all-time, including sci-fi, PK is one that everyone needs to watch at least once in their lifetimes. PK follows the story of an alien who comes to Earth on a research mission. While exploring the planet of human, he loses his remote to a thief that needs to go back to his planet. In an effort to find his remote, the alien – who at this time is called PK – tries his hand at all the religions but is still not able to find it. However, while participating in prayers of all religions, he also starts to question its superstitions. During this time, PK also befriends a television journalist and he finds out that his remote has been sold to a man who claims to call himself a middleman between the people and the God. What follows is a story of tolerance and faith that one should definitely watch. While the sci-fi element was very less as compared to the other Bollywood films, it did have a great storyline which showed an attempt to understand the human race from an outsider’s perspective. Starring Aamir Khan as PK and Anushka Sharma as Jaggu, the film has been directed by Rajkumar Hirani.
5. Action Replayy
If you’re looking for a sci-fi film with a love story, look no further. This film revolves around the story of Kishen, his wife Mala and their son, Bunty who is not interested in getting married because he feels that his parents are in a loveless marriage. On the other hand, Bunty’s girlfriend, Tanya, is keen on marrying him so she takes him to her grandfather who has been inventing a time machine. Upon finding out that his parents might head for a divorce, Bunty uses the time machine to go back in time and make his parents fall in love. Directed by Vipul Shah, Action Replayy features Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as the lead. Aditya Roy Kapoor essays Bunty, while the rest of the supporting cast includes Neha Dhupia, Om Puri, Randhir Kapoor and many others. While the movie didn’t manage to work too well at the box-office, it can prove to be good entertainer for a boring night.
6. A Flying Jatt
Released in 2016, A Flying Jatt revolves around the story of a superhero and how he tries to do good for the people of his community. A prominent and wealthy businessman, named Mr. Malhotra runs a factory near a lake that often produces a lot of toxic waste and pollutants. In order to make expand his business, Malhotra wants to build a bridge to the other side of the lake, however, due to a sacred tree being present on the other side; he is unable to do that. He tries to convince the owner of the land, Mrs. Dhillon to sell him the land, but upon refusing, he hires a mercenary named Raka to cut the tree. As soon as Raka tries to cut the tree, Mrs. Dhillon’s son, Aman appears but is badly between by Raka. Aman is thrown to a pile of toxic waste and struck by lightning at the same time, gifting him with superpowers. What follows is something you shouldn’t miss. Helmed by choreographer-turned-filmmaker, Remo D’Souza, the film stars Tiger Shroff and Jacqueline Fernandez in lead roles.
