Parveen Shakir, the famous Pakistani poet, would have been 67 today. She died when she was only 42 in the year 1994. Her death was due to a tragic car accident. Parveen Shakir had started writing at a young age with the pseudonym Beena. However, she reached greater heights of fame when her first poetry book ‘Khushbu’ was published in the year 1976. Parveen Shakir was honored with Pakistan’s highest award Pride of Performance for her contribution to the field of literature for the year 1976.

Parveen Shakir was known for being ahead of her times and writing poetry that showed the soft side of a woman’s emotions. Her poetry was considered lovers’ guide and was greatly popular among the young crowd for its romantic quotient.

She was not only a poetess but a promising civil servant. Parveen Shakir was a teacher for nine years until she joined Pakistan Civil Services in the Customs Department. She was later appointed as the Secretary of the Federal Board of Revenue. In fact, she was on her way to work when Parveen Shakir met the tragic car accident. She had separated from her husband by the time of her death. Parveen Shakir was survived by a son.
