Rami Malek just won the Best Actor Award at the 91st Academy Awards held at the Dolby Theatre in the US.
Rami thanked the Academy and tweeted:
Thank you to the Academy for recognizing the work of so many from the cast and crew who made all of this possible. I have absolutely treasured playing Freddie Mercury and I am so profoundly humbled and thrilled to honor him this way.
Rami was born to Egyptian immigrant parents. He was raised in Los Angeles and had difficulty assimilating to the Egyptian culture as a first-generation American. However, he is later quoted to have said: “I am so enamored and intertwined with the Egyptian culture. It is the fabric of who I am.”
Rami’s middle-eastern looks made him susceptible to roles such as ‘terrorist’ or ‘suicide bomber’ but he grew tired of doing these roles and told his agent to refuse any roles that typecast him in that way.
He finally got his breakthrough in the series Mr. Robot where he plays the protagonist who suffers from various mental and social disorders. Critics loved his portrayal of Elliott Alderson.
Rami won an Academy Award for his role in Bohemian Rhapsody where he plays the role of Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of Queen. He moved to London and worked with a dialect and movement coach for his role. He also took singing and piano lessons for his film. He watched the LiveAid concert 1500 times to perfect his craft.
There is very little known about his personal life and he is known to keep it that way. His social media posts don’t reveal much about him except the charities he supports.
