Mani Ratnam is one of Indian cinema's most critically acclaimed directors for having made non-formulaic cinema with a commercial appeal.
Mani works mainly in Tamil cinema and has directed the top celebrities and actors of the country. Mani's first film was in Kannada, Pallavi Anu Pallavi, in which Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor made his debut. His film Nayagan starring Kamal Haasan features in Time magazine's All Time Top 100 Films list.
Mani's first Hindi film Dil Se starred Shahrukh Khan, Manisha Koirala and debutant Preity Zinta. The film was a box-office disaster.
His latest film Guru released in 2007 was a hit and featured Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai in the lead.
