Much of 2017 was spent debating the pros and cons of nepotism. The word triggered huge discussions and star kids, star siblings and star cousins came under the spotlight as debates ranged on whether they deserved to be there, if stardom came easy to them and how lucky they were compared to the ‘strugglers’ and ‘outsiders’.
But recent episodes in the lives of two aspirants have shown how fickle fate can be. And that belonging to an influential family or having great connections is no guarantee for a smooth ride in Bollywood.
Sara Ali Khan, daughter of Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh, must be wondering what she did wrong to land up in such a soup. Much was made of her debut – Kedarnath opposite Sushant Singh Rajput , directed by Abhishek Kapoor (of Rock On!! and Kai Po Che fame) and it turned out to be one of the most anticipated releases of the year. She was even directly pitted against Sridevi’s daughter Jhanvi who is soon to be launched by Karan Johar. It was said that initially KJo was planning to launch Sara but things didn’t exactly work out and Amrita chose Abhishek over Karan.
Now, Kedarnath’s fate hangs in balance. Recently, the producers (KriArj Entertainment) filed a case against Abhishek for his alleged tardiness and unprofessionalism leading to delays while the director’s team claim there is financial mismanagement on the part of KriArj. The other rumours doing the rounds were that Abhishek wanted the hero, Sushant to be replaced since the latter wasn’t giving dates while Sushant’s team claim the actor’s dates kept getting postponed and he couldn’t allot more dates. What a mess!
In such a scenario, obviously, the film will take a beating. There were whispers that Kedarnath might be shelved totally but finally now it's confirmed that the second schedule is on amidst all the stress.Obviously, there is too much at stake to completely shelve the movie. How much of the mess reflects in the film – if and when it gets completed - remains to be seen. But it can’t be too pleasant an experience working on a film where there is so much confusion going on and where the producers and director don't get along. Now, a concerned Saif has reportedly started taking personal interest in the project while a bizarre story did the rounds of how Amrita was consulting astrologers who said the film was ‘jinxed’. Poor Sara! A controversy like this is the last thing a newcomer would want!
On the other hand, there is Isabelle Kaif, Katrina Kaif’s sister who, it is being said, will be mentored by Salman Khan. Isabelle, it’s no secret, has been eyeing Bollywood for a while now and due to Katrina’s connection with Salman, it can be assumed that getting a break will not be a problem. She even made her debut in an Indo-Canadian film (Dr Cabbie) co-produced by Salman though that sank without a trace. Now, she is giving her career a second shot and it’s said she has been signed for a project opposite Sooraj Pancholi in which Salman is again involved. Unfortunately Sooraj’s trouble with the law in the Jiah Khan case is far from over and there are question marks over the film. Isabelle though is being seen out and about, attending events and getting papped but will all of it lead to a full-fledged career in Bollywood?
Simply put, success in the industry is as much a matter of luck as it is a matter of connections. So just hailing from a film family may not be enough. As for the young ladies, perhaps they may just have to wait a little longer for their moment under the spotlight.
