Unless you have been living under a rock or have been far, far away from planet Earth, you would know that Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Sanju is rocking the box office like no other film has in the recent past. Aside from the story and performances, what people are still marvelling at is Ranbir Kapoor’s amazing transformation into Sanjay Dutt not just physically but also emotionally.
In one of the scenes, Ranbir is seen playing Munnabhai, Sanjay Dutt’s iconic 2003 film, Munnabhai MBBS, that not just shattered box office records but also changed his image. In the scene, Ranbir, playing Sanjay, is shown to be shooting for Munnabhai and the scene that has been recreated is the one where Munnabhai (a friendly goon masquerading as a doctor) confronts his bete noire Dr Asthana (played by Boman Irani) in the classroom. Now, Rajkumar Hirani, the director of both Munnabhai MBBS and Sanju has released a video that shows how difficult it was for Ranbir to transform into Sanjay Dutt, from the look to the mannerisms.
Ranbir says he lost count of the number of look tests done to nail the Munnnabhai look correctly. “We must have done around 14-15 or more,” he says.
The makers also took help of prosthetics to get it right. “The prosthetics had to be pulled down to get Sanjay Dutt’s famous ‘droopy eyed’ look. “Playing Sanju is one thing and playing Munnabhai is another,” says Ranbir who also got some height added to his shoes to emulate Sanjay Dutt’s gait.
It was after a lot of trial and errors that they finally managed to can the scene which has turned out to be one of the highlights of the blockbuster movie.
