Mumbai police arrested Vikas Sachdeva, the man who allegedly molested actress Zaira Wasim on board an Air Vistara flight. The action was taken after the Mumbai Police registered an FIR against Sachdeva under section 354 IPC & POCSO Act in the matter. Zaira was not willing to lodge a complaint but did so after much convincing by the Mumbai police.
The 17-year-old actress said that she was molested mid-air by a middle-aged man, drawing strong reactions by women's rights activists and politicians. Zaira broke down on an Instagram live while narrating the incident of her molestation by a co-passenger on board a Delhi-Mumbai flight. The National Award winning Kashmiri actress complained about her ordeal on an Instagram live video, claiming that a middle-aged man seated behind her moved his foot up and down her neck and back. In the self-shot video on Instagram, Zaira is also seen breaking down.
On the other hand, the wife of Vikas Sachdeva, Divya made a strong case about her husband saying that he is a family man and can never do such a thing to a girl. She claimed that her husband was distraught after losing a family member, tired and sleeping in the flight.
During interrogation, he reportedly told the police that whatever he did was “unintentional”. “The accused claimed he had been to a funeral in Delhi. He was very tired and asleep throughout the flight. The act was unintentional and was not done on purpose,” said a senior Mumbai police officer. Another senior officer, who did not wish to be named, said, “He has told us that he inadvertently touched the actor and had later apologised. We are, however, not buying his defence.”
