The Indian film actor Soumitra Chatterjee, died earlier today after testing positive for the coronavirus.
The legendary star was aged 85, and was famous for starring in over 300 films.
He had a 60-year-long career in cinema, which saw him rise to become one of the most legendary actors in Bengali cinema. Read on to see our list of his top ten films.
Apur Sansar (1959)
This was part of Soumitra Chatterjee’s first ever on screen debut. It then went on to be part of the famous Apur trilogy of films.
Sraboner Dhara (2020)
This Indian Bengali film was directed by Sudeshna Roy and Abhijit Guha, and tells the story of how Alzheimer’s disease affects relationships. It is based on a short story called Between Raindrops.
Abhijan (1962)
Soumitra plays the role of a hot tempered taxi driver who is passionate about his vintage 1930 Chrysler car. It sees Chatterjee play one of his most intriguing roles.
Ahalya (2015)
Chatterjee starred in this 2015 short film directed by Sujoy Ghosh. It brilliantly received and gained acclaim for its interesting plot twist at the end. The film starred Soumitra Chatterjee alongside Radhika Apte and Tota Roy Chowdhury.
Hirak Rajar Deshe (1980)
Hirak Rajar Deshe, which translated to Kingdom of Diamonds was as Indian Begali sci-fi film. It was the sequel to the 1969 film Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne, which later went on to become an extended series by Satyajit Ray.
Belaseshe (2015)
2015 was a busy year for Soumitra Chatterjee. He starred in Belaseshe which tells the story of a couple who are on the verge of separation just before their 50th anniversary. It explores the topics such as love and complexities within relationships.

A private detective Feluda (Soumitra) and his cousin Topshe get hired by a perplexed man to take care of his gifted child. They go on a quest to find a treasure from his past life.
Joi Baba Felunath (1979)
This Bengali mystery film is based on the novel called Feluda, which was originally written by Satyajit Ray himself.
Jhinder Bandi (1961)
This epic based on a film tells the story of a man Gauri Shankat Roy who pretends to be Shahkar Singh, the king of Jhind. The actual king disappears, leaving Gauri to take the king’s place. Does he get found out?
